New dog won't go to the bathroom, it has been 40+ hours :(

Asked by goose756 (655points) June 14th, 2010

We picked up our new dog Kallie, Saturday around 5:30 pm. It is now 10am on Monday and she still has not gone to the bathroom.

She was drooling a lot on the car ride home and got sick when we eventually arrived home, so I thought maybe all of that just got her really dehydrated and nervous. However, she has eaten a little bit of food and has been drinking water very regularly and still hasn’t gone!

I am certain she hasn’t gone in the house, I have checked. I know she has to go sometime, I just want her to know it’s ok to go! Any suggestions?

Call the vet and ask them. They may want to see her.

@chyna just got off the phone with them and they are saying to just keep waiting, and said basically “what goes in must come out”. They told me to call back tomorrow if it continues, but right now it is nothing to be alarmed about. I’m still open to anything you guys can suggest! Anyone else have a situation like this?

She may be nervous in her new environment, not knowing where and when she can go. Have you been outside a lot with her? I think if you are outside for an extended period, or even walking her on a leash, she will eventually go.

Take her somewhere where a lot of dogs have been going. A dog park or a regular park. Walk her regularly.

Tell her it’s OK to go to the bathroom.

just spend time with her…love on her….she will be fine! @chyna is correct! She is scared…that is all!

Maybe she is shy. Put her outside and leave her alone for a few minutes.

Make sure you giver her heaps of praise, like a surprise birthday party with treats when she eventually goes… especially outside.

She probably is just nervous. If she has been in the house, she may feel nervous about going in the house. Most dogs want to naturally go outside. There may also be too much stimuli for your dog right now. Make sure voices are low and soft and that let her explore on her own without stalking her. She needs time to explore and investigate without worrying that you may pounce on her at any moment. Not saying you are but to a scared dog, large humans can be intimidating until they feel more secure about their surroundings and the new human owners. You can stay in the room only not so close. It will give her time to decide what she feels is a safe distance. With time she will learn to trust you through feeding. If you don’t have a yard to let her loose than when walking her take your time and give her time to sniff around till she finds a spot she wants to go.

When I got my Diesel, he didn’t pee for well over a day, and I grew worried also- he was just a puppy, afterall! Anyways, it was simply because he was nervous. (By the way, Diesel was very easy to putty train, so take it as the silver lining.)

I just kept taking him out and telling him to “go potty.” We had a lot of walks and there was a lot of sniffing. I made sure there was plenty to drink and eat. I think that’s all you can do.

Offer her some water with low sodium chicken broth added to be sure she drinks a fair amount. Then offer her a small amount of milk. Next take her for a long, relaxed walk. Preferably through a park where other dogs have done their business.

If she still doesn’t go then when you get home allow her to be alone in the back yard as she may be like some dogs and not like to go to the bathroom while on lead.
