What ethnic differences are fueling the violence between Uzbeks and Kyrgyzies in Kyrgyzstan?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) June 14th, 2010

Ethnic violence has spun out of control in Kyrgyzstan with Kyrgyzies killing, burning and looting in predominantly Uzbek neighborhoods near the country’s border with Uzbekistan. How ethnically different are these two peoples? What is driving their need to kill one another?

I was wondering the same thing, kind of like the Hutu’s and Tutsies from a few years ago.

Tribal conflicts have been a fact of life in that region for thousands of years. The Soviet Union’s practice of moving populations and setting political boundaries without regard to ethnicity have exacerbated this. The pot has just taken 19 years to boil over after the USSR broke up.

I’m puzzled myself. I think the real reason is far more complex. Like who got what kind of power offering favors to some but not others.
