How can I cheaply change an HDMI signal to a component (YPbPr) signal?

Asked by fortris (683points) June 17th, 2010

I need to split the HDMI signal from my xbox, then change one of those signals into a component YPbPr signal for my HDPVR (sound is necessary for both ends).

I’d like to do this as cheaply as possible, as it’s not “required” but simply improves the quality slightly. Thank you for your time.

@Thammuz I know, it’s what I record with now. Note “I’d like to do this as cheaply as possible, as it’s not “required” but simply improves the quality slightly.”

Then i don’t understand the question, you need to split the signal and convert it or just to split it?

Because if it’s the latter it’s much easier to find double headed cales for a component out than to find a converter AND split the signal.

It’s possible but requires a signal converter which will be expensive (probably more than a new xbox). Also, if the HDMI signal is encrypted you probably can’t convert it anyway.

@Thammuz To be as specific as possible, HDMI simply looks prettier. But my PVR only has an imput for component, so I want to duplicate the HDMI signal ,one to my TV, other to be converted to component for the PVR.

You could simply buy a double headed component/HDMI cable. If you are adept in wiring and electronics, you can soldering an HDMI cable to a component. I’m not really sure if that’s what you’re asking or not…

@Drcpb Do you know where I could buy such a cable? And if there would be a tutorial on how to do this?

@fortris if i recall there are some unofficial cables that have both outs working parallel.

Otherwise i have this to suggest, It seems to be a one way converter but since it uses no electricity it’s more likely to be a hardware converter that works both ways.

@Thammuz Thanks, I’ll look into wether it can convert both ways.

I’ve found them (for PS3s) at Gamestop. You will most likely not be able to find a double headed cable for an original Xbox.

You can maybe find a tutorial on the net for soldering. You should keep in mind that you could mess up your wires if you solder them wrong.

Good luck!
