Your thoughts on telethons?

Asked by AmWiser (14947points) June 18th, 2010

Another telethon. This one to benefit victims of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Will you give and if so why?

Personally, I just don’t see the benefit in telethons. It seems as if the people in disaster areas are mostly in the same shape 5–10 years from now. Seriously, where does all the money go that is raised from telethons?

bad television and there are much better ways to make money. Do folks love Jerry Lewis that much??

we have short fundraising here in KY for salvation army angels at christmas to meet goals.
30 minutes here, 30 minutes there. That’s all it takes.

Help, cures and even cleaning up oil in the gulf comes with a price tag no one can ever totally financially prepare for and that includes our government. Fund raisers help alleviate and spread out that burden and those that can will give to the cause they see fit to support. This oil spill will exceed everyone’s expectations and more than just money will be needed to put this one down!

All of the telethons I’ve seen have been very dull and boring. If it is for a cause that I want to donate to, I’ll donate, but through another source.

My biggest concern is how much money is skimmed of for fundraising expenses (including big salaries and fees).

@ItsAHabit – thats what I’m talkin’ about.

Given that I don’t own a television, not much. However, I do think raising awareness of the impact of the spill on human lives, along with oil-soaked ducks, is important. The Gulf region is 1) economically dependent on both the fishing industry and 2) the oil industry. Mississippi’s economy is quite fragile.

Nothing says you have to watch television or Larry King if you’re not interested in what’s on.

1 television stations take a large chunck called production costs (they refer to it as)
2 the wats(800) lines as they used to call them (telephones etc) take another chunck
3 the new sets take another usually built by tv station ,local tv celebrities another
4 the postal sevice even pre sorted first class costs money
5 utilities such as satellite dishes ,electricity.
6 although you may think that everything is donated it costs a great deal of money to run a telethon hundreds of thousands of dollars
I know I have worked as a volunteer for years and have my eyes wide open (used to have chapters that signed the checks) .
THINK ABOUT IT I STILL CONTINUE TO DO IT AND LOVE IT BUT I AM NOT BLIND.
