How much lube should I put on my Springfield XD-40 after cleaning?
After a year of using and cleaning my pistol I just pondered TODAY, “How do I know I am using the right amount of lubricant when cleaning my gun.
What do you look for to know you have applied the appropriate amount of protectant?
What does it look like when there is not enough/ too much?
Do you use separate cleaner and lube, or do you use the all in one?
Side note for the XD-40 (or similar gun): I got the compact for concealed carry a year ago, I just got Thunderwear and tried it on for the first time. How do you concealed carry your 40/45? Even the compact seems just huge.

Just coat all the internal parts as thinly as possible. You don’t need to lubricate, just prevent corrosion. If you use a water-based cleaner, make sure everything is completely dry before oiling. The only exception to this is if the weapon is going to be used in sub-zero temperatures; in that case, remove all oil with solvent before reassembly (at very low temperatures, gun oil acts more like glue).
I carry my full-size pistols (M1911, Ruger Super Blackhawk) in shoulder holsters. My Glock 30 (medium/compact .45 ACP) is carried in a behind-the-waistband holster; a carrier with two spare magazines next to it. I sometimes carry a subcompact (like a .45 ACP derringer) in an ankle holster.
@stranger_in_a_strange_land great answer! Thanks!
I just have to ask though . . . and please don’t take this as a criticism . . . where do you go that you might need TWO spare clips! I just kinda chuckled when I read that… No offense meant.
It’s a habit carried over from my Army days; I’ve been retired less than a year. The magazine carrier is attached to the holster, so I might as well keep it filled.
Well thank you for your years of service & enjoy your time off!
