Is it better to stay awake or go back to sleep?

Asked by RocketSquid (3486points) June 22nd, 2010

Let’s say you work the typical 9 to 5 shift. When you got home at 5, you couldn’t help but doze right off, only to wake up at 11 fully refreshed and awake. You shift isn’t for another 10 hours.

What would you do in this situation? Would you try to force yourself to go back to sleep, or try staying awake from there on out?

I’d take 2 Benedryls plus a Melatonin, and as soon as the effect kicked in, I’d go back to sleep.

And probably wake up about 5 or 6 hours later, since I had just slept for 6 hours (the medicine will add the need for a few extra hours, but in this scenario, there is time for that).

It depends on how tired you get, and how much stamina you have. When I was younger, I could sleep 6 hours, and then go for the next 20. However, at my age, I often doze off for a couple of hours between 6 pm and 8 pm and the go to bed at my regular time.

I’m not a good source for an answer, because my usual bedtime is 2 AM and I wake up around noon.

I usually try to go back to sleep but then I lie there thinking about whatever is keeping me up and stressing over the fact that I’m up. This inevitably ends in accidentally falling asleep but thinking I’m awake and then eventually getting the morning headache.

If it’s a matter of insomnia:
I’ve been trying to read up on insomnia cures and such. There seems to be a consensus that you should get up and do something relaxing like listen to music or read a book to take stuff off your mind and then get tired without stressing.

If it’s just bad timing, I would try to avoid the nap as much as possible. If you can’t, pull out a crazy old book at bed time. Though they are very good, the language tends to be too… wordy and put me to sleep if I’m in a cozy bed. “Moby Dick”, “Scarlet Letter”, anything like that. Wordy.

If it’s college… well… most things in college are done on tiny amounts of sleep…

Speaking of which, I’ve got a book to read. Good luck!

Go to bed and try to sleep. This is your natural routine.
If you stay up, then by morning you will be sleepy, and by the time you finish work at 5pm you will be exhausted.

Myself I would have a night cap & try to go back to sleep, failing that, I’d read a book in bed until I dropped off :-/ never fails …..

I will sleep. I might need my energy to do other thing. But before I sleep I usually eat and have some entertainment(if I don’t feel like to sleep) then sleep. I’ve done everything I need to do today and I’m ready for the next day routine.

I would get up at 11 pm, and do some of the things that I should have done when I got home—laundry, pay bills, dust, vacuum, tidy up the house, etc. and then go back to bed at about 1:00. I would not stay up and do anything that could be construed as entertaining, because then I would stay up and not be effective at work the next day.

Sometimes when you come home tired, you are really needing hydration. Being excessively thirsty often masks itself as tiredness late in the day.

Masturbate, then go back to sleep.

@ChazMaz truth to that!

R. Jandl commented in an “Ask the Doctors” column that masturbation has a number of benefits:

It enables the playing out of pleasurable sexual fantasies.
It releases sexual tension and often produces a pleasant, tranquil feeling.
It helps a person become more comfortable with their own sexuality.
It is an enjoyable experience when shared with a partner.
It can curb impulses to have inappropriate sex with someone. 3
Other Internet and text references list additional benefits associated with masturbation:

No one gets pregnant by masturbating.
It helps maintain good pelvic blood flow and strong pc muscles.
It is safe. One cannot be infected with STDs during solitary masturbation.
It’s great for stress relief.
It can help you sleep.
It can temporarily relieve menstrual cramps in women.
A person who masturbates can learn about the sexual responses of their own body, and thus be better prepared for sexual activity with a partner at a later time.
