Can an email virus steal passwords?

I just opened an email from a person who I haven’t talked to in a long time saying that he is stuck in the UK and needs money. I think it may be an email virus trying to steal my passwords and credit card numbers. I was wondering if that’s possible and how can I know for sure? What should I do?
