Chrome Messenger Bags?

Asked by James_Mal (441points) June 24th, 2010

I was wondering if anybody has ever owned one of these bags, in any size, as I was looking to purchase one for myself. I’d like to get your opinions on how versatile these things are. I live in Oregon, and it rains like crazy so the waterproof thing is a bonus. I have looked at Timbuk2 bags a bit, but honestly I don’t know how much I like those. If you’ve got a compelling reason to choose Timbuk2 over Chrome, please let me know!

I’ve owned one since 2004 (just before they got crazy popular). I have the big one. It’s big—definitely, but I’m fairly tall. I can carry two bags of groceries in it.

I love it. Love. It.

Except for the fact that there’s not really any small pockets other than the teensy one… I don’t love that.

It’s a great, reliable bag.

@andrew Yeah, I like the straight up size. I’m around 6’1’’, so maybe I could handle the large, but was thinking medium. I’ll go to a local bike shop and try them out myself, but wanted opinions. Thanks!

The large isn’t that bad when it’s empty or nearly empty—plus you get the secret compartment on the large.

I would love a secret compartment….........on a bag

I like both bags but keep in mind that the new Timbuk2 is TSA compliant so you don’t have to remove your laptop to get through security. This may not matter to you but I thought I would bring it up.

@missingbite I guess that is a neat feature, but I’m the sort of person who drives places rather than flies. I enjoy road trips. While this is probably an invaluable feature for some people, it’s one that I see as just neat and convenient. And @andrew I have not heard of this secret compartment! I just know that you can remove the main vinyl shell from the bag, and put stuff underneath.

I have had a few (and still do) of these bags. I would greatly recommend the backpack over the shoulder strap.

@judochop Could you maybe give a few reasons as to why? Is the backpack more versatile? Comfortable? I suppose I liked the whole messenger style bag because of the excessive bike riding that I’ll be doing. I don’t know if any of you have ever been to Portland, OR. Our slogan here is “It’s Portland, grab a bike” (as well as “Keep Portland Weird”...). I plan on going out on campus quite a lot, through any sort of weather, and hauling around a lot of junk in the process. Do you have a particular favorite backpack?

W/ a chrome if you have annoying freinds they’ll hit the buckle and release the bag onto the floor
