American TV shows 'flopped' for Australian TV?

Asked by bluemukaki (4332points) June 24th, 2010

I might be crazy, but when I look up clips from American TV shows on YouTube the clips, ripped from the US DVDs or straight from a recording of the show some scenes seem to be flopped (flipped horizontally) from their Australian broadcasted counterparts, but otherwise identical – including text being preserved in direction.

Can anyone think of a reason for this?

I suppose that the Australian versions might have used footage from different cameras than the American releases. It’s unlikely that anyone would go to the immense trouble that it would take to keep the text facing the right way.

That’s what I figured, but the shots are identical – just flopped. They’re definitely not from different angles.

@bluemukaki I’m afraid I’m out of defenses for your sanity, then. :D

No idea. What I have noticed though, is that news footage etc. from the US doesn’t ever seem to be in widescreen, or even HD. Maybe we just get higher quality pictures.
