Does a baked ham with caramel glaze sound good to you?

Asked by Val123 (12739points) June 27th, 2010

We’re low on food, so I started taking inventory of what we DO have. In the freezer I found about ¼ of a baked ham I bought a while back. Further research turned up some apple caramel dip. So I said, “Hmmmmmm!”
I don’t think I’ve ever glazed a ham before. Do you think this would be good? Also, any tips or advice is more than welcome!

@janbb As in, “sounds good,” or “grossly sweet”? :)

janbb's avatar

Kinda both, unfortunately. I think I might skip the dip with the ham and look up recipes for a regular brown sugar glaze.

Caramel would be a bit thick for my tastes.

Val123's avatar

I was thinking of thinning it out with milk or water…...

Since caramel is essentially sugar browned and caramelized I’d say go for it but maybe salt and season the glaze a bit and thin it down with a splash of water. Don’t forget the sweet potatoes!!

Val123's avatar

@Cruiser Thanks! But…we don’t have sweet potatoes. We don’t even have regular potatoes…..
I’ll let you guys know how it turns out!

Eureka! I just found some homemade BBQ sauce that my husband made! I dumped the caramel in there, and am heating it up now. This should be interesting! (I know someone who would just be aghast that I would even consider cooking something like this without a recipe!)

Well, the ants are going apeshit. I didn’t realize I’d spilled a little caramel on the counter. Those little suckers will sure inspire you to keep the counter tops spotless!

When it’s slow, do you ever post random comments in your own questions, even when no one is watching, just so you have someone to talk to?

Val123's avatar

@Val123 Yeah…I do that sometimes.

Val123's avatar

….Uh, @Val123 no shit.

Is this a private conversastion or can anyone join in?

Hi there @janbb! Hey! Don’t you hate it when people post recipes and warn against doing something, but don’t tell you why? I read two recipes for glazing ham, and both said to cut into the fat, being careful not to cut into the meat. Well, I couldn’t think of why, so after I put my glaze on top I stabbed into it with a knife to get it (hopefully) down inside…...was that bad?

janbb's avatar

@Val123 Ah – you just killed it!

Val123's avatar

No I didn’t! I don’t think….I mean, it was already dead, wasn’t it? I mean, I hope it was.
Man, I will never go to another Laotian bar-b-que again. It’s taken me ALL DAY to recover, and now I’m acting weird.

I think that would work. I have no idea how to prepare glazed ham, but it sounds good to me.

Val123's avatar

Well, it just sounds good. I think I’m craving the sugar to stave off the alcohol from last night…

Yummy. Do you have any jam or jelly or a can of cranberry sauce? I’ve used restaurant packets of jam/jelly before mixed with soy sauce and leftover home stuff for sauce. Uhm… the infidel beast tastes so good when baked.

Val123's avatar

Oh, now that was a thought @Neizvestnaya! Shoot. For better or worse, it’s done now!

You may want to thin out the caramel so you can sort of brush it on? I do like sweet on ham, so I think it could be a success. Like Honey Baked Hams that have the sugary sweet outside, There is never enough for me, I am waiting for them to get extra sugar coating, like extra crispy at KFC.

AstroChuck's avatar

No. Best to leave the ham on the pig.

YARNLADY's avatar

I love ham, but I hardly ever put any glaze on it. I prefer just plain baked ham, with baked apples

Val123's avatar

Verdict! It was pretty darn good! I think though, that I would have almost preferred just caramel rather than the bbq sauce too. @JLeslie Exactly…..I wish I knew how to get it inside the ham too!
