Ipod synching after wiping Mac?

An ipod can only be synched to one Mac. If that computer has to be wiped and a new OSX put on it, how can one retain the apps that were bought directly to the ipod; the computer wants to erase the ipod as it doesn’t know that it was the ipods master in a past life.

There are programs you can buy (or, perhaps, download for free?) that “rip” the stuff on your iThing back onto any computer. Check it.
Afaik, the App store maintains their own records of which apps were purchased.
Plus, everytime I’ve ever gotten an app, they have mailed a receipt to me. And this was for apps which were totally free and without my syncing to my computer.
I just find the whole syncing procedure a huge waste of time and do so as little as I can get away with.
But I’ve had no trouble at all deleting and re-downloading apps on my phone at all.
I have no idea if the same applies to music purchased from iTunes as I haven’t done that yet.
As far as your apps go, as long as you’re logged in under the same account on te same device, you should be able to redownload them.
Music and other content isn’t as easy. As with other content on your computer that was synced up to the iPod, it’s your responsibility to back up your personal data to guard it against loss, just as you would get insurance for a house to protect its’ contents from vandalism, fire etc. The computer iPod relationship is a one way street on those things, unless it was purchased on the iPod. In that case it should give an option to transfer purchases to the “new computer.”
