Does the world grow less considerate each day or does it just seem that way.

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) June 30th, 2010

I seems to me people have less consideration for each other as each day passes. Is it just me or do others feel this way? Or is it we are more informed through TV, the net, etc. Your thoughts?

I really think it just seems that way.

I think once a person becomes an adult and sees the full spectrum of human behaviour (unless they are unfortunate enough to have seen base behaviour as children), we assume that people are growing ruder and less considerate. Me? I pick up a history book and learn what horrible things adults did to each other and to children routinely in years gone by and am grateful that I do not live in my parents’ and grandparents’ day, never mind the middle ages, or antiquity.

While there are pockets of humans’ inhumanity to other humans in this era, I honestly don’t expect the Spanish Inquisition. And I am damn grateful for that.

It can depend on where you live. Some towns are friendlier than others. If you’ve suffered some rudeness and its gotten you in a bad mood you can imagine the world’s less considerate.

Your inner world reflects your outer! However, I do agree with you so we’re both screwed. :)

I don’t think it is less considerate.
I have been lucky to know some very considerate people and I make sure they know I appreciate their kindness :)

I think it just seems that way. When put to the test, I have found most people to be helpful and considerate.

I read somewhere recently that bad news reaches the news because it is what is unusual and out of the ordinary. It’s true.

Life experience does that. Over time, you start to see the world for what it really is and has been..

I think it just seems that way. In today’s media intense world some A-hole throwing a tantrum being rude, mean and pissy will get a ton more hits on youtube than someone who posts nature videos. My day is full of considerate nature loving people who sneak peeks at the A-holes!!

Human behaviour in large groups has been consistently abhorrent and discouraging. Even in the darkest chapters of human history there have been people who remind us of what we are capable.

I try to limit my contact to people who regularly reach down deep inside themselves to find the qualities they long to experience from others and then they emulate those behaviours and values.

There are a disproportionate number of such people who frequent fluther. That is why I spend time here.

To all of you who reach out to be respectful, considerate and loving, I thank you for your efforts and I try to emulate you in my own way.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again… people may seem awful these days, but compared to past human history, we are pretty well off when it comes to positive human relations.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard – That statement is only relevant to the time.

Past human history said the same thing. :-)

I think people have always been harsh and vicious, but at least today I can bash religion without getting my head detached from my shoulders. Well, in this country anyways.

If you were only referring to the news media reports, it might seem that way because people gloss over the 100 people who turned out for a volunteer project and remember the one guy who stole a girl’s puppy in the park.

In our daily one on one activities, I have not seen any reduction in consideration, random acts of kindness and respect.

@Symbeline Exactly right, and the bible-bashers will face a civil war before they get back their “good old days”.

TexasDude's avatar

@ChazMaz, so with that in mind, things just keep getting better.

It just seems this way. The opposite is the case. The news media love to focus on the doom parts. But there’s also the audacity of hope and it’s real. There’s progress in the world we tend to overlook.

As the saying goes, you won’t know peace without war.
Both having a symbiotic relationship.

There is a balance. We might have a better grasp on racial relations. But, kids are less safe walking through their neighborhood today then 30 years ago.
We might have more variety in food choices, but we need more chemicals to produce that food.
Technology has produced great things, but it has weakened the workforce.

I would not say better. It just is. :-)

@ChazMaz, how very Zen of you. I like that analysis.
