Why did they ask Kagan where she is on Christmas?

I saw this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tku61sKhPGo it’s funny, but what was the Senator getting at? Or, was it just a moment of levity? Well, they do comment on just having learned that Jews eat Chinese on Christmas, so I guess that means they don’t spend too much time with Jewish people. Did anyone see what he was saying before and after?

I expect a moment of levity would be welcomed….I can’t imagine going through a grilling like that!
@KhiaKarma Do you know why they asked in the first place? My perception was she turned it into somethng funny, but I don’t know the intent of the Senator in asking the question.
No, not sure. I would have to see the stuff that happened before the comment…. I have a hunch that he just didn’t phrase the question right when he asked it and it evolved into a funny little skit. Maybe someone else will have some insight.
It was a clumsy attempt to make a prejudiced comment by the asker.
@YARNLADY Was he trying to make a point that she does not celebrate Christmas?
Someone also asked if she was team Edward or team Jacob. WTF? Is this what congress has become?
@tinyfaery I saw a clip where she had to state like10 times that she think don’t ask don’t tell is a sucky policy and has always disagreed with it. It seemed like they wanted to trick her into stating it, and instead she was saying it proudly.
@JLeslie Team Edward and Team Jacob are references to a very popular book/movie series that is currently sweeping the nation. (twilight)
Yes, I believe it was a lame attempt to make sure everyone knew she is not a Christian.
@YARNLADY Oh, I have heard of Twilight, but know nothing about it. Did Kagan know the reference?
@JLeslie transcript “I keep wanting to ask you about the famous case of Edward vs. Jacob, or The Vampire vs. The Werewolf.”
Showing off some good judgment, Kagan declined to take sides, saying, “I wish you wouldn’t.”
End of discussion.
@YARNLADY Gotta give her credit. She seems quick on her feet, and to have a sense of humour. I like that.
::groan:: Seriously?
To paraphrase @tinyfaery, this is what congress has become?!
Remember, this is the christian right wing asking questions. I am sure that it was to make sure the Republicans know she’s Jewish.
I never even thought to ask here religion or ethnic origin until the zealots brough it up.
While we are at it I especially hate the questions and attitude of Jeff Sessions. He used to be a judge (terrible judge) before he was elected to congress.
