What is this noise?
I’m in Spain right now (around Valencia) on a campus with a lot of trees, and there’s this noise that starts around dusk and goes on through nightful. It sounds like a dying cat, but people are insisting that its some sort of bird.
I thought that it was a catbird, but I don’t think they live in Spain, and it doesn’t really sound like one anyway.
Any ideas?
It’s not really like a “mew”, like this site has as a sample of the sound of what I previously thought it was.
It’s more like a meeeeee-owwwww, meeeeee-owwwwwww. meeeeee-owwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. And it keeps going up in pitch – it’s giving me a headache, honestly.

It’s probably a barn owl. Edit: If it sounds like a demon or something dying.
See video
@rangerr – No… that’s too raspy. It honestly does sound like a yowling, dying animal.
@troubleinharlem Hrm.. I don’t know if barn owls even live in Spain.. Is there a way you can record it?
@rangerr – I’ve been listening to random youtube videos of birds that sound like cats, and it sounds kind of like this – a mockingbird.
Could it be a type of heron? There are some I’ve heard that sound like dying animals and/or women screaming.
Maybe Cicadas?
Cicadas hatch in July…but I don’t know about in Spain.
They make quite a racket, screaming all night.
?
@Scooby
Hey…maybe!
I have a Peacock in my area and it is soooo loud, and yeas..they shreik like something being murdered. lol
Peacocks yell ‘help’ not meow. A mockingbird could indeed be mimicking a cat, and causing the sound.
Your description could be a peacock. Or Neil Young.
@filmfann I’ll just go on living and pretend that you didn’t mean to insult Neil Young. You’d never do that…
