Should we teach our dogs to get in and out of the pool?

Asked by dutchchic (57points) July 1st, 2010

We have 2 dogs. They don’t get in the pool or try to jump in, however a few friends have recommended to put them in and show them how to get out… just in case they slip in… any thoughts?

What kind of dog, or size of dog do you have?

Depends on the kind of dogs. Are they even big enough to get out on their own?

They are both mix breeds..14 pounds each, yes they do run around outside alot

If they fell in, would you want them to drown? It is a danger if they are outside alone.

If you feel they can climb out on their own, I would say put them in with you a few times. Show them the stairs and acclimate them to the pool. They may love it.

Dog owners have an obligation to protect their pets from harm by controlling where they are allowed to go unsupervised.

People owned by cats are not given much opportunity to give cats advice.

It sounds like a good idea to me.

Not knowing what breeds your dogs are, I’d be very careful if you tried to teach them as some breeds can’t swim.

I know several instances where people have lost pets because they fell into the pool and didn’t know how to get out, one where the dog fell in the winter, got tangled in the ice and the cover and drowned.

So yes, if they have access to the pool area, I would definitely teach them where the steps are and how to use them.

Always good to plan for contingencies.

I was astounded to read that dogs should not be left in the yard with a pool unsupervised. The dog I used to have went (probably fell) in the pool once, and I didn’t know it until she came in crying and soaking wet.

My current dog loves the pool and would be in and out all the time, except it is now surrounded by a child resistant fence, so he can’t get in.

i know i am responsible for their safety, just didn’t know if showing them the pool would entice them to just jump in whenever…. My dad’s dog was found in the pool, but it was due to seizures.. so sad and would never want to have to witness that.. so thanks for all responses so far, it really helps! Oh and breeds, one is a Pom/Pap mix the other sort of Maltipoo/terrier

I would definately teach them. But you may want to put in some type of ramp so that they don’t rip your liner with their nails.

Definately! It would be the safest thing to do.
