Whether it’s fictional or real. In the dim & distant past or comparatively recently. Involving human or animal tales of fortitude. Something personal to you & your family or an instance you heard of from afar.

A friend of mine relayed the true story of meeting a spider in an unlit hallway in the middle of the night. It was SO large, that she felt a breeze as it passed her leg. Now, that’s scary, I don’t care who you are.
In 2002, when my doctor said he found something on my mammogram, I was terrified.
I will choose from the famous, past, afar category. :-) I think the story of Ernest Shackleton and survival of the crew of The Endurance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endurance_(1912_ship) after they were stranded in the Antarctic is one of the most extraordinary tales of survival, fortitude, courage, leadership and fatefully, “endurance,” that I have ever heard. That even a one of them got back home is extraordinary, but there was not a single man lost. Amazing.
@lillycoyote Thanks for reminding us of a fascinating story.
The story of the Uruguayan national soccer team in “Stranded” where the ate their dead team mates in order to survive a horrifying plane crash ordeal in the Andes mtns.
Swiss Family Robinson is my fav though!!
