Do you have Shakespeare in the Park during the summer?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37734points) July 1st, 2010

Where I live in a little town in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, we are opening our thirty-third annual Shakespeare in the Park today. The Hilo Community Players is presenting Love’s Labour’s Lost on a stage built completely by volunteers—as it is every year—in the middle of a downtown park.

The costumes are designed and constructed by volunteers. The actors are all volunteers. The technical aspects of the production have all been put together by volunteers.

Do you have Shakespeare in the park during the summer where you live? Do you attend? Do you enjoy it?

Or, do you even enjoy watching Shakespeare performed at all?

I love Shakespeare but sadly there’s none out in parks here. The British weather isn’t reliable enough for regular outdoor performances.

@downtide Ha!Ha! Weather! Hilo happens to be the rainiest city in the US with an average of 120”/year (that’s 305 cm/year), and we still do it. We don’t hold or cancel for rain! The only time we cancel is if the electrical gear is going to be standing in water.

When it rains the audience pops out their umbrellas, and the actors get wet. We’ve even sold t-shirts in the past that said “Shakespeare makes me wet.”

We don’t have Shakespeare in the Park, but we do have a Shakespeare Festival – 3 plays, every summer. It’s done on one of the stages of the local state college, but it’s done by a professional troupe. I go and see at least one play every year.

NYC has Shakespeare al fresco all over the city and NYC’s particular Shakespeare in the Park draws some big names.

Yes, Ours is running The Tempest and Richard III, with the apprentice company doing Much Ado About Nothing. They’re also doing Twelfth Night as a participatory family event. In addition to the performances, they run a summer theater camp for kids.
