Sarah Vowell. Smart, interesting, insightful, knowledgeable and laugh-out-loud funny. What more could you ask for? She writes non-fiction. Though “respectable?” Maybe not. I’m not sure what you mean by that.
How many young writers of either gender do you expect to be “respectable” and “influential”?
“Respectable,” whatever you mean by that, influential and/or famous? Those are all relative terms, particularly for writers these days.
@frdelrosario by any standard, I’m not looking for an objective answer. Does anyone comes to your mind? And I’m sorry if my English isn’t very good. It is not my mother language.
Famous? Again, you’re asking an awful lot of inexperienced people.
Essayist Beth Lisick writes witty prose about modern life. She’d probably argue her respectability, influence, and fame, however.
All the notable young female authors I can think of are over 40. That’s still very young to have achieved some stature as a writer.
Well, Stephenie Meyer is only 36, but… I wouldn’t recommend her. Eurgh.
Geez, what’s with all the ageism towards young writers?
I don’t understand your comment, @lillycoyote. Why would it have to be ageism just to ask who might belong in a certain category? If I were to ask whether there are any world-class Chinese pianists, would that be racist?
how old is J.K. Rowling? born in 1965… so sorry doesn’t meet your 40 max request…
Jennifer Crusie is hilarious. It’s romance/chick lit territory, she’s incredibly popular and is considered by some to be the next Nora Roberts.
Recommend for reading, or recommend for hiring for a writing assignment?
Melissa Banks
Lauren Weissberger
Allegra Goodman
Jhumpa Lahiri
Arundhati Roy
I’m not sure how old she is but Mary Roach’s books are always interesting.
Zadie Smith and even, though to a lesser extent internationally (I think), Miranda July are both pretty well known female authors. I would also include Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The New Yorker picked 20 authors under 40 whom they felt were ‘worth watching’ and you can find a NYT article on that list here. Hope it helps.
