Where do fleas and ticks live?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) July 4th, 2010

I lived in a wooded area growing up, so finding fleas or ticks on our pets was pretty normal. There was a lot of wildlife, including deer, so it made sense to me that there was a high risk for our pets living in that area.
I do use preventative treatments for my pets now, of course, but I live in the city. I found my cat chasing a tick across my kitchen floor last night – where do they come from? Do they just live in the grass?

I was innocently lying in my grassy backyard looking at clouds one manic day. I rolled to my side to stare face to face with a tick perched atop a blade of grass. A few run-ins with scorpions and rattlesnakes after that; I don’t lay down on the grass anymore.

central texas, btw. I think they’re pretty much anywhere furry creatures are.

They are in the grass.

They live in the grass, dead leaves, fecal matter, carpeting, and just about everywhere. The adult form prefers a mammal host to suck blood, and lay eggs.

I’m not sure about ticks but fleas I know can hide inside furniture.

@TheOnlyNeffie Raid fogger works real good for killing fleas and ticks. You have to make sure you lift up all your furniture cushions so the fog can get at those hidden areas. You should have one fogger for each room in your place and make sure nothing sensitive (like food, etc) is exposed to the fog. It worked good for me anyway but my cats always stayed indoors so that probally helped too.

@Jabe73 we are actually planning to fog this week. I don’t think that we have fleas, and I’m pretty sure the tick my cat was playing with in the kitchen was a fluke. My cats are indoor cats, but I treat my dogs AND my cats with spot treatment. We have a crazy earwig infestation though, so it’s time to bomb the place :)
