Can you help me with some skateboard advice?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) July 4th, 2010

My grandson turned 15 years old (ga!!) today. He’s into skateboarding and I wanted to buy him a brand board, if I could afford it ($50 or less.) Went to ebay….millions of skateboards, all different, ranging from $5 to $300.
Went to Walmart. They didn’t even have skateboards. All they had were these Razor kick scooters for $32. I hesitated but then bought it.

Here’s the thing…is it too juvenile for a super cool 15-year-old dude? Is it just not cool? Or is it the new thing?

And if I return it and go on the hunt for a regular skateboard, is there anything “important” I need to know about them?

Thanks

BTW…it’s me. I’m not telling you who “me” is, but ga it hurts seeing a big 1 for my points! It’s OK. It just means I’ll get another 10K party again someday. :)

What does your BTW statement mean? Sorry I don’t understand.

Regarding the skateboard, I would get a refund and give your grandson a card saying you two have a date for whenever he wants…to find him a skateboard.

You could do it together and be sure he will have what he really wants.

I know who you are, silly. And believe me – it’s easy to get to 5 or 10 k. Done it a few times.

To answer the question – as a boy – young at heart (okay, extremely childish) and a former skateboarder – I’d say get a gift certificate from a store that sells them. Or, get him one with a card saying you hope he’ll like it – no problem to exchange it.

Welcome to fluther ;-)

@MissA It’s me…Val123.
@zenele I figured all my wissy’s would know right away!
That’s a great, great idea you guys! Fan tastic! (Now I feel yupid because I didn’t think of that. BUT I have 6 POINTS! And even a “Great Question!” Thanks to whom ever did that!)

@I_Dutchess Why did you have to start over? (If that’s not too personal.)

I have skateboarded for over 25 years. Are you looking to get the whole thing or just the deck (the wood part)? If you want the whole thing you are not going to get anything cool for $50 bucks.

All the parts are interchangeable. If you need a deck I would get this. It is what I use. All the holes are that same. You can slap any trucks (big metal parts) and wheels on it you want. If he already has a skateboard he already has this stuff.

@MissA I didn’t have to. I wanted to. When I came on back in November, I didn’t have any intention of staying. I just wanted to touch base with a Wisdm family member. I created my account on the fly, with no thought at all! Then I got stuck here, and stuck with a booooring name! A week or so ago I posted a question, asking people’s opinions on a new user name for me. On Wisdm my name morphed from DutchCat to Dutchess (long story) and that’s who I was for the last two years. Anyway, in my question all of the Wisdm folks came on and gave me a one word answer: “Dutchess.” I hesitated just because if you don’t know the story it might seem kind of arrogant! But if I run into any problem I’ll just tell them the story.

@johnpowell I’ll go look! Thanks!

I looked @johnpowell…..why do they have full skate boards from only $9.00 on up on Ebay? And they look cool, IMO…..

Dutchess_III's avatar

@zenele Well, it’s going to take me a little longer because I’m not on here six hours a day any more! I got this thing called “Work” that interferes with my real life!

@I_Dutchess Why don’t you petition the Fluther Gods for a change of name? Can’t guarantee they’ll say yes but it wouldn’t hurt to ask

I AM SO CHEATING WITH MY Val123 account!

@Lightlyseared Naw. It’s OK. I’ll stick with this. Thanks

You get what you pay for.

You will not get a good skateboard for 9 bucks. You will get trash that was bought at target for 30 bucks and barely used.

He is 15 and the skateboarding community are dicks at that age. If he rolls up with Target gear he will be mocked.

If your budget is 50 buy the deck I linked to above. Buy him some bearings with the other 20 bucks. Let him come up with the 50 for trucks and wheels and he will have a proper ride.

my son is 14 and would not ride a razr. do like @johnpowell and just get him a cool board. he’ll ahve all the hardware.

@I_Dutchess Thanks for the explanation. But, can’t you really do what someone said…petition the fluther gods? It would seem more dishonest (for lack of a better word) if everyone believes you to be someone else. Just a thought. Nice to meet you, anyway.

Hey Dutchess – it’s been your name for years now – and its no less “arrogant” than “Empress this or that, Zen, or Astro something. It’s just you.

There are a lot of skateboard stores around. Maybe the best thing would to be to try to see if you can give him some kind of gift card so that he can pick out his own. You don’t want him to be totally uncool because he is stuck with a skate board his grandmother got him, do you?

: ) thanks Zen. : )
Actually, I straight up asked my grandson. His board IS broken but his Mom’s boyfriend (that phrase, “Mom’s boyfriend,” has always rung oddly in my ears…) anyway, Mom’s boyfriend is going to buy him a new one. I, however, get to buy him some cool skater shoes next payday! We’ll shop ebay together.
@lillycoyote LOL! Yes, I totally agree. But….it’s not like I was gonna paint “GRANNY!” on it in flames! Anyways, I figgered it out.
