How long does the alcohol in Bailey's Irish Cream keep the cream sweet?

Asked by anartist (14813points) July 8th, 2010

I use Bailey’s in my coffee because milk is always spoiling before I get around to it. I keep the Bailey’s in the fridge where I would keep milk. I suspect there is not enough alcohol to keep it in the freezer. Does it last longer in the fridge than that acidophilus milk or whatever the milk is that is supposed to last a long time?

“Baileys® is the only cream liqueur that guarantees its taste for 2 years from the day it was made, opened or unopened, stored in the in the fridge or not when stored away from direct sunlight at a temperature range of 0–25 degrees centigrade.

One of the keys to achieving this 2 year shelf-life is in our patented process of blending of fresh Irish cream with the spirits and the whiskey without the use of preservatives. The alcohol acts as a natural preservative for the product.

Under normal conditions of storage Baileys has a shelf-life of 30 months.

If you are concerned about a bottle of Baileys® please check the best consumed before date on the bottle – all bottles now carry a best before date. This number is located on the bottom left hand side of the back label. Example : Code 11 20XY would mean that we guarantee the product would taste perfect until that date (XY is the year 2 years from the date of manufacture).”

If you’re looking for an alternative, Land O’ Lakes brand of coffee creamers in the little individual ones (such as found in restaurants) are available in a box of several hundred and don’t require refrigeration. I get mine at Sam’s Club but haven’t seen these or a similar brand at regular grocery stores.

BTW. I’m not talking about the artificial creamers. These are really genuine half and half.

I have a bottle of Bailley’s that was opened almost three years ago and still tastes fine. There won’t be any more open that long any more, my niece loves the stuff.
