Is it worth it to upgrade my iMac from 1G RAM to 2 or 4G RAM?

YES! More RAM allows the system to open programs faster, and better manage multiple programs. I am a fairly basic computer user myself, but I always get as much RAM as I can afford.

how easy is it to upgrade on a iMac?

I’m happy with 2 GB on my 2 Ghz Core Duo MacBook, even while editing video. I started out with 512 MB, though.

2 GB should be pretty cheap at this point. It should be easy to replace via a panel on you Mac.
