Civilization II was the most addictive and enjoyable game I’ve ever played. There were so many variations on strategy and the game was so absorbing. I like the later Civilizations as well, but none has ever hooked me as thoroughly as Civ 2 did.

@cfrydj I never played that one. Its a tough choice for me between MGS Snake Eater, MGS Guns of the Patriots and Hitman Bloodmoney. I hope they are making a new Hitman.

cfrydj's avatar

Ahh yes, the Hitman games. I love those games. I’m also a big fan of the GTA games.

I’ve never played MGS. It’s similar to Hitman, right?

Jabe73's avatar

@cfrydj Similar that they are both stealth type games. One big difference is that in MSG your character (either Solid Snake or Raiden) is not a hitman and you have one single mission in the game. They are definitely worth playing, MSG 4 (Guns of the Patriots) is an absolute must! I guarentee you will play it more than once because there are so many options and ratings to play for where you can do different things. God of War, I enjoyed all 3 for ps2. I didn’t try the new one yet.

This is going to be a long list.

Math Bingo was the first video game I played- that was back when the games came on audio tape. You never forget your first.

Oregon Trail was amazing for it’s depth at the time and long game play. It still has a huge following and I remember playing it for a long time. It was the first game I played that had a story behind it that consisted of more than a little dot spinning around the screen.

SMB will always have a place in my heart. Days spent with that little man. It was the first game my whole family got into and made for some memorable rivalries/tournaments in our house.

Galaga was huge for me when it came out and I could have bought the arcade machine- it would have been cheaper than the money I put into it. I love the music, the colors and the controls.

Mystery Case Files Ravenhurst/Return to Ravenhurst, while casual, is one of the few PC games that actually gave me the creeps. I love those games because they really made me think. It wasn’t just about timing or hand-eye coordination, it was about brain power. Plus, the graphics are gorgeous.

Beyond all of those, there is just one that stands out far and above. Flower. It’s the only video game that moved me emotionally to the point that I had to walk away and think about it. Think about my actions, the meaning of the game, the experience of it. It is truly the best game I have ever played. It shows that games can be more than head shots, potions and side scrollers. Flower is art, pure and simple.

I actually have my original Atari systems, the first 1 that ever came out in 1977 or something like that (2500) I think. I have the other old one as well (3500). I have the original joysticks and many of the original games for them. I wonder if they are worth anything.

I really, really loved the early versions of Sim City. The upgrades eventually got too complicated for my little pea brain so I didn’t enjoy the game so much, but I was totally addicted to it at first.

Wow! @ragingloli. That’s quite a list. What on earth has it been that has made me think that you’ve spent your time on loftier and more rarified pursuits?

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Hmm, all time favorites… all of the Marios, of course.
Wonder Boy for the original Sega system,
Tomb Raider 2 (ps1),
all of the Tekken games,
Soul Caliber 2 (ps2),
the entire Silent Hill series (ranks at the top of my all time favorites – ps and xbox),
God of War (ps3),
Call of Duty 3,
Call of Duty 4,
COD Modern Warfare – and I spent a good deal of time on WAW, but I didn’t care for it as much as the others. Nazi Zombies keeps it on the list, though. (xbox360).
Wii Fit. (wii.)

Ooh! I love Prince of Persian games, and even the first one that came out, the 2D one, i love that one too. :D And then Thief is one of my favourites for sure (‘cause it’s fun sneaking around stealing stuff, ya know?), i and used to love Tomb Rader. Half-Life is fun also. And some other first person shooter games, the names of which i can’t remember right now. Oh, and Max Payne too.
Me and my husband have not played in a while, but we want to build a new gaming computer and dust off all those games and play ‘em again. (or finish those we never finished) :D
And, i nearly forgot! Age of Empires, now that game NEVER get’s old. :)

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Ohh, I loved Prince of Persia for the PC when I was a kid. I played Myst when it first came out, too. I forgot about those. I was also a Sims 1&2 addict for a long long time.

NaturallyMe's avatar

I had a Myst demo once and couldn’t figure out how to play the game! Maybe i was daft or something, but i couldn’t do anything or get my character to do stuff. It was odd, but there you have it. It looked like something interesting though, that i’d have liked to play.

Weird, I just asked this same question to another member via PM…
I love games with unique gameplay mechanisms. So Katamari Damacy ranks high on my list. So does Gitaroo Man, which is a somewhat rare PS2 Japanese port sorta-music game with really funny songs and a fun playing method. I love music games, when I live in Japan I spent a lot of time at the arcades playing their music games (this was before Rock Band and Guitar Hero made it over). Now that we have Rock Band, I love playing that game. I’m a master of drums! And I sing well too.

I also love Mario Kart, especially the newest Wii version with the bikes. And the other Mario games too. All of those are super fun, though I much prefer the 2D ones versus the 3D ones. I’m really looking forward to the Donkey Kong remake coming out for Wii soon as it was one of my favorite game series. Oh, so was Ratchet and Clank, though I haven’t played them on the PS3 yet.

Tetris, Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Centipede, Mortal Combat, and that Commando game where you had to shoot bad guys in a warehouse, at an airport and in the jungle with an AK-47.

NaturallyMe's avatar

Ooooh! Tetris! I loved that game! And man, i was good at it. :D My dad’s friend always used to watch me in amazement at how quick i could turn the blocks around, LOL.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night is my all time favourite game ever. It’s dark and Gothic, with over 200 different things to collect, like weapons, accessories, armour and even…Boston Pizza. It’s got great music too, and I love exploring the castle. I’ve been playing it for more than 10 years, and I even quit my first job ever after two weeks just so I could go play.

I love Shadow Hearts as well. Another dark and Gothic game, this one is also very mature. It’s got a lot of humour in it, but it also deals with theology, suicide and real life history. (The antagonist is Roger Bacon, haha.)
I just really enjoyed the fact that the story was original and meant for an adult audience, it was a great treat of an RPG when compared to the slew of anime inspired crap that includes immature little bitches wearing goggles who come with reheated concepts and plots I’ve seen thousands of times before.
While the gameplay is simplistic, it works, and the game never lets go of its darkness and poignant emotive factor.
I also loved its prequel, Koudelka, but the gameplay was so broken…SH also has sequels, but they get very immature and childish compared to the first game. I have nothing against gay wrestlers, but I’m not quite fond of toilet humour or snappy one liners evoking the Apocalypse.
Still, Rasputin telling the protagonist to bite him was pretty funny. Enwayz.

I also love Shadow Madness. This is the most broken game ever, with the shittiest gameplay ever, but its got a story and dialogue that makes every RPG I’ve ever played pale in comparison when it comes to humour, philosophical insight and character development.
Basically it deals with everyone going mad, and eventually you end up fighting the physical manifestation of mankind’s hatred, kinda like Zeromus from FFIV. It shoulda been a graphic novel rather than a game though, or at least, they should have just implemented a traditional turn based combat scheme instead of that garbage they made. What were they thinking?

Also, Final Fantasy VI. I pretty much despise Final Fantasy, especially the recent entries beginning with X, but VI is goddamn special, and will always have a place in my heart. It was a beautiful game in its time, and still is today. Great everything. My words and praise are not worthy.

’‘Psycho Kefka laugh’’

Other mentions are Breath of Fire II, Earthbound, Chrono Trigger and Silent Hill 2…but if I start talking about how genius SH2 is, I’ll never end, haha.
