I can pop my ears at will. Is this normal?

Asked by PhiNotPi (12686points) July 9th, 2010

Anytime that I want, I can pop my ears. I do not need to swallow, yawn, pinch my nose, blow hard, or anything else. Is this unusaul, or can a lot of people do it? I did it ten times while typing this sentance, so it is easy for me.

Probably not so good for your eardrums in the long run. It is not a common practice and would thus appear to be unusual. (sentence)

Normal is a very broad range. Pilots and scuba divers (who change pressure a lot) can do it too.

I can too, comes in handy when traveling. I wonder if it has something to do with being able to wiggle your ears or perhaps the structure of the inner ear…

@marinelife Do you think it’s learned? That would make sense as I grew up in mountains.

marinelife's avatar

@gemiwing I have seen speculation to that extent. That most people have difficulty doing it, because they don’t practice it regularly.

Wow…envy here. I have Eustachian Tube Dysfunction and often have to pop my ear by stretching my jaw. Upon doing it several times in a row, an observing friend said that I looked like a fish out of water.

Normal and desirable if you do a lot of air travel. But not something you should do for amusement.

I understood that the mechanism is in place to equalize internal and external air pressure. Ear popping for fun sounds like a bad idea; find another hobby.

I’ve always been able to pop my ears. It is really helpful when I’m driving through mountains or flying. I, too, have wondered if that has something to do with my being able to wiggle my ears.

How would popping your ears be harmful even if you wanted to do it for fun?

“Regularly popping your ears isn’t safe, but at times, manual pressure release is necessary. Your bones become brittle as you age, making forceful ear popping even more risky if you are older. You may temporarily feel as if you can hear better after plugging your nose and blowing, but doing so on a regular basis isn’t safe.Only as a last resort should you plug your nose and gently blow to pop your ears.”

@marinelife @gailcalled Popping my ears is not a habit or hobby of mine. I just said “I did it ten times while..” in the question to emphasize that it was easy. Sometimes I go for months without popping them.

I too can do this. It may be something to do with me living and working at sea level, whenever I used to go up the slightest incline I found my ears would block up and over time I’ve learnt to just move my jaw in a certain way and hey presto they’ve popped.
