Nashville: cool or not cool?

Asked by zina (1661points) February 25th, 2007
....progressive/alternative/counter-culture communities? non-country music? diversity and accessibility? organic food? exciting art? fun stuff? natural areas? interesting organizations? Composer, considering a relocation. I've read the obvious Google-able pages, and need real people's perspective. San Francisco is my point of reference. Will I survive in Nashville?

Nashville, like Norleans before the storm, is what it is and so cool it's hot, but may not be a replication of your favorite environment and may or may not be in your comfort zone. Is there a large University in/near Music City? Medium sized cities that aren't known for their cultural progressive character (SF, NY, Seattle, etc.) often have enclaves of hipness near Universities. If you have to relocate, embrace your inner twang.

Here's the hitch with N'ville. Yes, it's a college town, but Vanderbilt is absolutely one of the stodgiest, conservative, "old South" universities in the region. So, don't expect a great deal of forward thinking. If you really put your mind to it you can find a (small) more progressive community in nashville, but it takes work... Myspace may become your best tool....However, besides the heat, it is a gorgeous town, with great restaurants, and a increasingly diverse music scene. Low cost of living as well.

I’m sorry GD Kimble, but i’ve got to say what i feel, and i’m sorry if it comes out the wrong way:

Have you ever even been to Nashville? I lived there for 10 years, and I have no idea what the f*** you are talking about

“If you really put your mind to it you can find a (small) more progressive community in nashville, but it takes work”

All you have to do is read the FREE weekly The Nashville Scene to find all that stuff she mentioned,—music, community, organic food, art, natural areas, interesting organizations… they even have a freakin website.

and MYSPACE? are you kidding me? if you want to be in a forward-thinking community of 13 year olds myspace is definitely for you!

Lived in Nashville all my life. great four changes of the seasons, but high humidity in the summer is a negative. other than this, my city is just great. if you love all kinds of music, this is the place to be. Nashville is also a medical and college city. Vanderbilt heads the list, along with Belmont University and Tennessee State University. food? a gallon of milk cost $2.50. i thought you would like that. and, gasoline is well below the national average. many people are moving to Tennessee. we now have more sunshine than the state of Florida. welcome.

I have always wanted to go to the grand ol oprey in nashville. To stand on that stage, and see and feel what others already have.

I believe in nashville, others might not laugh at my southern voice.
