What is a good bedroom theme to have?

Asked by Moxy (182points) July 11th, 2010

I have sky blue walls, light brown and white furniture with a bed but no bed head it is an ensemble bed. I want to change my room into colours brown, black, red, and white. I have a black and gold antique quilt cover on my bed with pillows to match aswell as red and gold cushions on the bed aswell. I have gold curtains. What can I put above my bed and I have been told to decorate my boxes to hide my collectables in. Should I colour the boxes in black and gold antique patterns? What else should I do?

You could make a fabric wallhanging to hang on the wall behind the bed. Things like shutters or a room screen flat against the wall make an interesting headboard. Or you could make an upholstered headboard in fabric to match the cushions on your bed. What color are you planning on changing your wall color to?

I prefer an almost monastic simplicity: white walls and ceiling, plain furniture and little decoration. It promotes restfulness.

I like your chosen colors if they are good for you to fall asleep in. They sound like great wake up colors. Black sheves and boxes would drive me crazy with the dust showing. How about natural wood or brown or white boxes/shelves. You did not say what your collectables are but if you want to see them I would keep the boxes or shelves simple. White or tan walls would be better than the blue. Also a simple set of lines matching the bed spread might be fun to paint on the wall for a head board.

I’m also one for a soporific theme when decorating a bedroom. If you are using such strong colors for a bedspread, I would go with very soft whites or creams for most of the rest of the decor.

Blues and browns are a nice combo..I am having a bit of hard time visualizing the incorporation of red though. lol

The gold is a relatively neutral addition, if it is true gold and not some funky flat wheat color. haha

The combo you speak of would have a better chance of blending if you paint your walls over from the blue, or eliminate the red in favor of similar blue accents, or shades of purple or yellow even.

Do you want a more modern look?

Perhaps add a few interesting pieces of metal sculpture or some abstract art of some kind.

A large metal wall scuplture or, one of my favs. divider screens, would make an impressive backdrop for your headboardless bed.

A tapestry hanging of some sort might work as well… or mosquito netting or canopy type curtains to sequester the bed and showcase it.

You can also shop for a used headboard through many different sources for a modest price if that is what you desire.

A couple of large floor vases with some striking arrangement of your choice as well as some extra accent lighting such as a floor lamp in a corner or under a window would add a nice touch as well.

Without really seeing the room in question my guesses are off the cuff of course.

Have fun!

I’m having a really hard time with light blue walls, and red/black/brown/white/antique gold. That’s too many colors. Red and black together tend to be more modern colors, and light blue and white have a cottage/shabby chic connotation. If you find it not working for you, you may want to consider painting the white furniture either black or red to eliminate a color from the room. Make sure all your pictures are framed in black, and matted in red to pull the colors together on the walls, and neutralize the blue. See if you can find a headboard at the Goodwill and paint it black and antique it in gold to help tie colors together to give the room cohesion.

Oh – I was assuming the blue walls would go. Like @PandoraBoxx , I couldn’t see blue walls with black and red; perosnally, I would prefer a blue and white bedroom theme to a black, red and gold one.
