How early can I renew my license?
Okay so I have to renew in October but I’m not going to be home in October at all so how do I renew? Can I renew early in July or August?
It’s very important for me to get renewed because I’m turning 21 (so that “UNDER 21” text will go away) and now I’m a registered organ donor so I want to make sure that the “organ donor” thing gets on there ok so people can know my wishes if something bad happens to me (heaven forbid).
I’m kind of new to this…never had to renew before :) Thanks.

I was due for a renewal in late August but I renewed in last week (I’m turning 21 at the end of this month!) The only thing is that if you get it renewed BEFORE you’re 21, the “Under 21” text will still be there. It doesn’t matter how close to your birthday you renew, if it’s before, then the text will be there. You can still use the license to by drinks though, just make sure they look at the birthdate.
Oh that’s fine. I’m not much of a drinker anyway. :) haha, it’s kind of funny though.
“Your license says “UNDER 21”, ma’am”
“I AM NOT!!!!”
haha :)
So do you know if there’s a limit to how early I can renew? I’m leaving in August…won’t be back in Sept OR Oct so I really need to do it now when I can. I don’t want to do it by mail because I need my license with me when I go to school.
You can probably probably find out through an internet search. If you are in the US, you’ll want to include the state name, since each driver’s license is issued by individual states.
@seekingwolf I believe you can renew whenever you want. I mean I renewed a month early and they had no problem. I’d just call the DMV in your area and ask! I don’t think you’ll have a problem though.

The best thing to do is to either check online on DMV website, which you can access via the State Of Oregon website. Or you can call and speak with a DMV representative make sure that you actually speak with a live person, I myself do not like the automative system.
If you are going to be in the same state, any DMV office can be used. If out of state, you would have to ask.
@seekingwolf I have been able to renew up to 6 months in advance everywhere I have claimed residency. I am sure Oregon will allow you to renew early. You may have to pay a small additional fee.
Again, double check with the website or a representative to be sure about all that concerns you.
Usually it is 6 months for government issued ID’s, but it probably varies by state. Since you have just turned 21 you probably have an exception to be able to do it now, even if typically it would be too soon. Everyone is correct, check your state website, or call the DMV. I know everyone bitches about calling government agencies, but I typically had very good service in FL. Can’t say as much for all states, but it is worth a try.
You’re probably going to have to renew twice. Once early, and then again over Thanksgiving or winter break when you’re home. Since you’re turning 21, you will have to do it in person, because they will update your photo.
Thanks for the advice everyone
btw, I’m not in oregon, I’m in Ny and college is in PA…I think it’s because I wrote “OR” in capitals that confused people ;D
Yeah I’m concerned about the photo update part. I’d like to do that now since I really can’t be here til…oh gosh, I don’t know. I don’t think I’ll come home for Thanksgiving but I will be here for Xmas.
Thanks again for the advice.
@seekingwolf Oh thanks for the clarification, did you have any luck with the website?
Yeah I found some good information there. :) Thanks.
I actually downloaded the form (for renewal), and showed up in the DMV with it all filled out. I was in and out really quickly.
My license will come soon renewed but with the “UNDER 21” text on it. I wonder if they will send me a new one without it once i turn 21 but oh well, I don’t mind. I also did NOT need to take my picture again. That will happen in 8 years.
Some states allow you to renew by mail.
