How often do you use parallel parking?

Asked by Yehekai (50points) July 13th, 2010 from iPhone

I just want to know if I really need to be worried about it or if It isn’t as important as I think.

It is a skill you need to develop.

I find I rarely parallel park. Until, I need to.

Well everyone should learn to do it. How often you will actually do it really depends on where you live, how much you drive, and where you have to go.

I’ve been driving for seven years now…

I’ve parallel parked four times. And three of those times there were no other cars on the road. I don’t think I’ve ever parallel parked between two cars. The thought terrifies me.

Parallel parking isn’t even a required skill in Florida. They don’t test you on it at all.

I have rarely taken the car out without having to parallel park. It is a necessary skill if you have a driver’s license.

sleepdoc's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr I didn’t know it wasn’t tested there. I am sure you do fine at it though.

jaytkay's avatar

I use it every day I drive. But that’s just me.

If you have to use, I guess you figure it out. If not, not.

It is good to not be afraid of parking—and parallel parking is not that hard to learn. If a car can do it automatically, you realize you can do the same.

@sleepdoc

Ha ha ha! No, I’m horrible. I have a hard time judging distance due to dyscalculia. So, I always over compensate. It drives my husband crazy. ^_^

sleepdoc's avatar

@Seek_Kolinhar I wondered if you had the spatial difficulties with it, but wasn’t sure that was something one just asks.

I parallel park almost every day. Learn how to do it. If you never need it, yay for you. But it would suck if you needed to parallel park but couldn’t because you had never bothered to learn.

Seek's avatar

@sleepdoc Oh, I don’t mind at all. I also mix up right and left, and cardinal directions. North is up on the map, right?

sleepdoc's avatar

@Seek_Kolinahr well I guess in some ways better to know what you don’t know then be like the rest of us who have no idea

I try to never ever parallel park scary!!! it’s not even tested here i’ll walk far before I try that

I used to have to everyday at my old apartment. I’ve essentially mastered the skill and I find myself annoyed with people who can’t do it.

I use it every day to park at my home, and I have frequently driven in New York City so you really have to be good at it there. Very tight spots.

I parallel park rarely, but the cases in which I do so are because there are absolutely no other parking options without walking blocks and blocks. So the overall value of parallel parking is very high in the certain circumstances where you need it. It’s pretty simple once you get into the mindset of it – I find the key is using your car and its position relative to the one you’re parking behind to basically guide you all the way. I actually love parallel parking because I can do it in one nice steady move. And so can you, after practice!

If you cannot master this skill, you are not ready to drive a car, unless you are physically handicapped. Even then, you may need to sometimes.

It’s a rarity for me.

It can be done, but with effort depending on the squeeze factor. lol

jerv's avatar

Rarely, but often enough to need to remember how to do it.

Also, given the way people are here, the only way to parallel park is to have a fairly short car with a tight turn radius. I have parked my ‘85 Corolla (nearly a foot shorter than current models with a turn circle about 6 feet tighter) with less than six inches on either end at least half of those times, and have gotten to where I can do it with a 5-point turn instead of a long-ass time spent back and forth and back and forth and…. once you get the rear end in, it’s easy to crabwalk the front in, but there is no way to make it in one shot without turning the front wheels far enough to snap the CV joints.

It really annoys people when I take spaces that they couldn’t even fit in if they were shoved into sideways :)
