Does organic cotton shrink?

Asked by icehky06 (896points) July 14th, 2010

I went to a Jack Johnson concert the other day and purchased a small organic cotton shirt. I’ve tried shrinking it in hot hot hot water 50 trillion times and the darn thing won’t shrink! Help please?!

After the hot water, put it in the dryer, and it will shrink, unless the fabric was pre-shrunk before it was made into a garment.

That’s what I tried. I put it in wicked hot water then threw it in the dryer and put that baby on high. The damn think loves it’s size I guess. Errrr

The cotton must have been Sanforized, which means it had been pre-shrunk in exactly the same fashion you used. That doesn’t alter it’s being organic. All cotton is organic.

Organic cotton means it was grown without the use of pesticides. Most conventional cotton uses large amounts of toxic pesticides – Cotton is one of the most heavily-pesticide-using crops in the world. Buying organic cotton means you’re making a difference to help protect the land and rivers from toxic pesticides…but it doesn’t have anything to do with whether the shirt would shrink or not – so in this case the fabric is probably pre-shrunk.
