Should they? *Professionally speaking, yes. Will they? Absolutely not. Why not? Because it defies and defiles the foundation of this democracy.

*in business

I said this in another thread but I think one langage will help unite us not separate us

trogdor_87's avatar

I totally agree with Riser.

The problem is in deciding which language would be universally accepted as “American.” America is a culture of many nations who have migrated to this nation. We are one of the few major countries that lacks a deeply rooted history and culture. What is American culture? A convoluted, westernized soup of hundreds of ethnicities. English isn’t even American. It is Anglo-Saxon and Latin.

Yeah, this question was an offshoot from another thread, so oneye is safe <3

I’ll rewrite since i get to be lazy sometimes too…

“In defense of Spanish I believe America should be bilingual, or even trilingual (French/German). Out of all the nations on this earth, America is the one that ought to be multi-lingual; instead, we are the only one that has not grown out of English-centrism.”

It’s not a verbatim copy, but that’s the phone’s fault. /yawn

Can you clarify what you mean by “one language?” That English (I’m guessing this is the one of which you speak) is the only official language and that all governmental publications, including education, must be only in English. Hmmm? Or do you mean all other languages are banned from public usage? What about in the privacy of one’s home, or casa?

oneye1's avatar

no you still have the freedom to speak any langage just our national langage to be english and in no way am I saying stop teaching other langages in school but english first then others

I find it a blessing that we as US citizens have the honor of living in a county which is so diverse and robust with cultural possibilities.

@oneeye why wouldn’t our national language be it’s original language: Cherokee (or Iriquois, Navajo etc…)? The problem with what you’re advocating is that you’re making a value judgment about one culture being better than others by making it official while subjugating all others to a secondary role. Is English your choice because it’s what the majority of people speak? That being the case, when Spanish-speaking Americans outnumber English speakers do you think it would be appropriate to change the national language at that point to Spanish?

This is slightly off topic, but I remember an awesome political cartoon this conversation kind of reminds me of. In it there’s a congressman saying something to the effect of “we need to get rid of all the illegal immigrants.” In the next frame there’s a Native American who says “great, when are you leaving?”

oneye1's avatar

maybe I’m wrong here maybe I feel this way because its the only langage I speak

One official language English. In your home and on the street speak as you wish. Having one official language helps us just as having one official currency even though we use other things to trade.

(Adventualy America will be it’s own demise) America is a country growing into little nations of there own. Thus seperate beliefs and opinions ( hence the word seperate)

As English is currently the world standard language of science and business, I suggest English should be the official language of America, NOT because it has traditionally been the dominant language in America.

Should Mandarin become the world standard language, then we would have to reconsider.

in unison: “we are all individuals!”

I also believe English should be our official language. Really i can care less what you speak between your friends and family, but it really sucks trying to take someones order (im a waiter) when they barely speak the language and then something gets messed up and its my fault.

oneye1's avatar

and are we going to change all the road signs on the highways to be multi-language

flipper's avatar

Yes. I think we should all speak American as our official language.

shockvalue's avatar

@flipper: you mean like
“y’all come back now yuh hear?” as opposed to “Fancy a spot o’ tea then? Jolly good.”

flipper's avatar

Fer sure!!

flipper's avatar

I think you should be required to learn the LANGAGE before you are allowed to ask a question about it.

shockvalue's avatar

I assume you are referring to oneye1’s grammar… or lack thereof.
