Can I plant grocery store horseradish?

If you don’t plan to eat them, it won’t hurt to try. Worst thing that happens is they decompose and fertilize your garden a little.

I really really really really recommend planting it in a POT, not in your garden. Horseradish can be incredibly invasive. My parents joke that they had to move to a new house because they couldn’t eradicate the horseradish they once planted in their old garden. I too have had horseradish take over a huge garden bed. It sends out runner roots very deep down that are close to impossible to find, follow, and pull out, once it gets established. Gardener beware!

A friend of mine had some growing – it took over her whole back yard! Pretty plant, though, as long as you don’t want anything else out there.

(Hmmm, I wonder if deer eat horseradish…)

To both of you, I just wanted to say that I guess deer like all that is green and fresh, cause my son that lives in Montana said that he cannot grow a garden because all the deer come over to help keep the ground clear of any new growth.
