Any good books similar to the style and themes of Aldous Huxley's novels?

Asked by Carly (4555points) July 15th, 2010

He’s my favorite author right now. I’ve read Brave New World and, just recently, Island (his last book, and what he considers to be his best). I’ve read other books similar to his style and genre of writing: Orwell’s 1984, Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, and Lois Lowry’s The Giver was my favorite book when I was growing up.

I’m looking for some good books to read for the rest of summer, so any good suggestions would be great. (I’m a Lit major, so don’t worry about dishing out anything too challenging for me to read.)

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood is a novel of female dystopia.
Also try Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishigutro

The novels by Evelyn Waugh are in a similar vein.

Also, William Golding’s Lord of the Flies.

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin

And in a slightly different, but still dystopian vein, Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein.

I read Brave New World around the same time I read Dune by Frank Herbert. Liked them both a whole lot. Don’t know if that helps.

Not challenging but favorites:
The Girl, the Gold Watch, and Everything, a very unusual novel for John D. MacHonald
The Door Into Summer, Robert Heinlein

Both about second chances [who doesn’t want them?]

and try
A Clockwork Orange (1962) is a dystopian novel by Anthony Burgess even if you saw the movie

and William Golding’s Pincher Martin and Inheritors

The “I Robot” series by Isaac Asimov.
“2001: A Space Odyssey” by Arthur C. Clarke
“The Yiddish Policemen’s Union” by Michael Chabon
