I don’t speak French, but I’m writing a little program to help people type in French easily.
I need to know the order in decreasing frequency of each set of letters below. For example, for the “e” group, is the order è, é, ê, ë.
à
â
ä
è
é
ê
ë
î
ï
ô

Why the Euro sign?
I can easily find all the diacritical marks on my Mac keyboard. Do you think there is a demand for your little program? ´`ˆ¨˜çÇ
Why not use your energy to learn some French? It’s not hard if done slowly and systematically. And it is beautiful.
Chart of French Accent Marks
Name of Mark What It Looks Like Letters Used With Example
Accent aigu or acute accent é Only used with E étudiant (student)
Accent grave or grave accent à, è, ù Used with A, E, U où (where)
Accent circonflexe or accent circumflex â, ê, î, ô,û A, E, I, O, U forêt (forest)
Accent tréma or umlaut ë, ï,ü E, I, U naïve (naïve)
Cedille or cedilla ç Only with letter C garçon (boy)
Never mind. I didn’t know what I thought I knew.
@gailcalled, Trust me, on Windows, it’s much worse. Most people I’ve seen use the copy-and-paste method. Anyway, this is just a little weekend project; no biggie if it doesn’t get used. Learning French on the other hand…requires a pretty significant time investment, time which I don’t have right now (oh I wished I did).
@shared3: I have been learning French since I was in ninth grade. It is still fun and fascinating and can take as little or as much time as you choose.
Windows…ugh.
I can easily transliterate ιν γρεεκ ηερε.
@shared3 – I’ll put them in order of most often used to least often used. That was the question, right? They were almost all in the correct order for you anyway!
à This is their order of usage.

è Same here.
é

î and here.

ô I think these are used about the same.
œ
ù This is the order.

*note: The French don’t put accent marks which go above letters, on their capital letters.
Hope I’ve been of some help.
@Frteach: Can you give me an example of the ÿ used in word. And is the diphthong œ considered a diacritical mark? Thanks
@gailcalled – No, I haven’t the foggiest where one would use the y with that mark! I’m sorry.
Yes, I believe that it is considered a diacritical mark.
