My Netflix needs more variety... what are your top 10 favorite films?

Asked by poofandmook (17320points) July 19th, 2010

My queue is chock-full of horror, and I just haven’t been in the horror mood lately. My 3-month long misery had me watching about 2 horrors a day, and now I’m just slightly burned out.

So, please list your top 10 non-horror films. No subtitles please… only because it’s hard to find a time to watch them, since the kitties often block my view and then I miss stuff and have to rewind :)

I’d call something a “favorite” only if I’d watch it again and again. That would apply to these films:

— Fellini’s La Strada, with Anthony Quinn and Giulietta Masina, is on my top-ten list of all-time greats. But I’m afraid it’s in Italian and does have subtitles.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? is not on movie Olympus, but it is one I can see over and over and still enjoy the way a little kid enjoys hearing a favorite book read aloud.

The Man Who Would Be King, with Michael Caine and Sean Connery, based on a short story by Rudyard Kipling, is a thumping good adventure yarn that offers a clear moral without preaching, and it too has plenty of staying power.

Gone with the Wind stands up to many a viewing. I’m always hooked right from the opening titles.

— Jose Ferrer’s 1950 triumph Cyrano de Bergerac is another of my top ten greats for Ferrer’s Oscar-winning performance.

— I love Errol Flynn’s 1938 The Adventures of Robin Hood for romance and sheer swashbuckle.

Willow carried me away again last night.

— I watched Hook quite a few times with my kids before getting tired of it, even though I felt like it cheated—was overtly emotionally manipulative.

— I’d put Elvira Madigan on the list on account of seven or eight viewings decades ago, even though I’m not sure I’d want to see it again now. I’d call it a young person’s movie. Oh, but sorry—Swedish: subtitles.

— My all-time favorite just at present is the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

There. Ten. <whew!>

poofandmook's avatar

@Jeruba: Willow is my all-time favorite movie, ever. My nickname in certain other places is “Bavmordaa”, which is actually misspelled, but “Bavmorda” is usually taken. I also plan on naming my first daughter Elora, and if I had a husband who would let me go nuts with the name, I MIGHT just name a daughter Chyrlindria (also misspelled, but I like my spelling better)

Buttonstc's avatar

I’ll just offer one which I could watch over and over. Little known but worth it if you enjoy “slice of life films”.

The Education of Little Tree

It’s about a young Indian boy being raised by his grandparents. James Cromwell plays the granddad. Wonderful scenes of country living and a hilarious interlude involving moonshining.

The govt. wants to take him away to a boarding school to educate him and de-indianize him.

It’s a real interesting glance at one part of the history of our country from the viewpoint of one little family. Just a nice little tale to be engrossed in.

No special effects or bang-up action scenes. Just good storytelling.

janbb's avatar

Which reminds me of the movie Rabbit Proof Fence about the taking away of aboriginal children from their mothers to educate them. Also a great film.

Buttonstc's avatar

I’ll have to check that one out. Is it available here in the US?

I’m planning on getting a decent sized LCD TV soon and I’m hoping to be able to find one which is already set up to be Netflix compatible. Their $9 per month deal is the best bargain around.

janbb's avatar

Yes, it should be. I just got one (Netflix compatible) – way cool!

Buttonstc's avatar

Is there any place where there is a list by brand and size of which ones work with it?

I read that most companies making TVs with Internet or other connectivity are only doing it in the larger sizes (42–47 or larger). That’s too much for me right now.

janbb's avatar

Taking it to pm.

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard: Oh, I hated The Lucky Bones… it really did nothing compared to the book. And Stanley Tucci can’t be the bad guy!!

TexasDude's avatar

@josie, thanks man, much appreciated.

@poofandmook, I thought Tucci was creepy as hell and made a great George Harvey. The book will always hold a special place in my heart, but I thought the movie was pretty good in its own right. It didn’t make me bawl as much as the book did, but it was still ok. To each his own, though.

MissAusten's avatar

@Buttonstc Did you read The Education of Little Tree as well? It’s one of my favorite books ever, and I was very disappointed in the movie. Quite a bit different from the book. Read it, and then read a bio of the author.

Sorry, I’m too tired to make a movie list and most of my favorites have already been mentioned here!

poofandmook's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard: I guess I wouldn’t say I hated it, but I really really really enjoyed the book much more. And yes, he was creepy as hell but I don’t want him to be creepy! When I see Stanley Tucci, I think of Nigel from The Devil Wears Prada or Paul Child in Julie & Julia. I don’t want him to be George Harvey :(

Re: Stanley Tucci

I guess you never saw the first season of Murder One. This was my first notice of Tucci and even tho the series was ultimately unsuccessful (even tho produced by Stephen Bochco) he played a riveting, enigmatic, morally ambiguous and somewhat smarmy character. Tucci made you believe this guy would be capable of anything no matter how evil.

The lead character was played by Daniel Benzali, another excellent and intense actor and it was a toss-up between the two as to which was the more mesmerizing actor.

Tucci can play ANYTHING. he’s that good.

If it’s available for rental, that first season of Murder One would also be interesting to watch.

The series was ultimately unsuccessful primarily because it focused intently on only one case. This was not good for a weekly TV show where missing an episode left one out to sea.

But the acting and storytelling in detail was all extremely well done and would be great for watching in succession. Sort of like a mini series or really long movie. Tucci’s performance was so good in this. Too bad this show tanked but it’s definitely worth seeking out. The Bochco magic is still evident. That guy really knew how to present compelling material and gather top notch writers and cast.

If I’m not mistaken, Netflix also offers TV series for rental, is that right?

Even tho you asked for movies for your que, jan, I think you’d enjoy Murder One as well. Just think of it as the equivalent of several movies :)

poofandmook's avatar

@Buttonstc: Oh, I am certainly not denying Stanley Tucci’s prowess as an actor. I just don’t WANT him to be creepy. He does it too well. And I just want to remember him as happy and fun and good!

I <3 Nigel.

Buttonstc's avatar

Ok. Gotcha.

In that case, don’t put Murder One on your list :)

I’ll second My Favorite Year. A very underrated film. Larry before the Balki days.

And I love Peter O’Toole.

There was another lesser film of his in which he played a demented British scion of a wealthy family. In the opening scene (I believe) he has placed himself upon a cross.

Perhaps someone else remembers the title. It was hilarious in parts. Nobody does it quite like o’Toole.

Jeruba's avatar

@Buttonstc, I saw that. No idea what it was, though. I like him too, but I’m sure that’s not the one he wants to be remembered by.

Buttonstc's avatar

Yeah. But it really was funny.

Plus he has Lawrence of Arabia to eclipse everything else so I’m sure he’s not worried.

AstroChuck's avatar

@Buttonstc- Are you possibly referring to Brotherly Love?

Buttonstc's avatar

I just found it.

The Ruling Class

It has some really unique and zany moments. And I don’t think he needs to hang his head in shame over his role here. Anybody can play crazy but it’s a unique talent who can do it well.

You should definitely put this in your que if you like satire and excellent performance.

I saw it a long long time ago and it still stuck in my memory.

It’s def. one of a kind. The ending kind of devolves a bit but the rest of it is really unique. It will definitely hold your interest.
