How do I choose makeup for covering up a black eye?

Asked by drClaw (4452points) July 19th, 2010

Let me preface this question with what some will undoubtedly be curious about: The black eye didn’t come from anything nefarious, I just train MMA and got a quick pop to the eye during boxing.

Normally I don’t care if I get a black eye, but I have to take a picture this Saturday with my wife’s family! To make matters worse my wife is out of town until the day just before the picture, so I’m completely on my own figuring out this whole makeup deal.

Any help from the ladies or makeup experts or Hollywood monster mask makers is appreciated.

I recommend that you go to the cosmetics counter at a department store. Show the artist your eye and tell her about the pending photo shoot. She will match a covering foundation to your skin color. If possible get a matte foundation. It has a flat finish and will not need powder to keep the shine off.

Tip: If she takes pity on you she may give you a free sample of your skin tone foundation. It will be more than enough for your photo shoot. Clinique brand makeup technicians will do this if asked. Others may do this as well.

There’s always photoshop after the picture has been taken. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Maybe even the studio has someone who can touch things up on site. I went in to take x-mas pictures recently and they were able to add all kinds of effects on the fly.

Sephora gives samples of their products, but I am not sure about make up, worth checking out though (could always say you have allergies and want to test them out before buying).

Also, a lot of department store make up people will give make overs… so you could always stop by one on the day of the photo shoot and ask them to fix you up, they may not charge but make sure to tip them.

Okay…this is what I would use…first of all, go to a pharmacy and buy “Max Factor Erace Concealer Stick” (it looks like a lipstick) in White. That’s right…WHITE. Ask someone to help you find it if you are confounded as to where to look. Go to one of the larger chain stores: Rite-Aid, Walgreen’s etc. If they don’t have Max Factor——ask them for any other brand of White Concealer Stick.

Then, call around to better department stores like Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, Dillard’s (I have no idea where you are, can you let me know?) to get a second product: Dermablend. When you go to get it, show the person at the counter your eye and ask what shade would be best to use to cover it up. Dermablend is also a concealer, but a really heavy-duty one.

Use the white and pat it into the bruise, first. Yes, it will look a bit like clown make-up, don’t worry. Don’t cake it on thickly—just pat, pat, pat, covering up the bruise. Let it sit for about five minutes. Then, take the Dermablend and put that on over the white, blending and patting to get it just right. You may have to put some Dermablend on the other eye, too, to even out the tone.

Let me know how it goes. Hope this helps.

You need a concealor with a yellow base to counteract the purple, and then a good foundation. I’ve always had good luck with Merle Norman. They don’t have a counter in the mall, they have their own stores, so go online and find out where one close to you is. Do NOT use drugstore brands, they don’t have enough pigment in them to make a difference – and that’s just for covering up regular skin, so forget about it helping with a black eye.

@wgallios I wish that I could just let the photographer Photoshop my eye, but that would mean ‘fessing up to the in-laws that I didn’t care enough about the picture to not train for a week.

@DarlingRhadamanthus I live in Seattle and work near a Nordstrom & Macy’s. Any preference? How thick do you think the makeup will look? I like your idea.

@lucillelucillelucille If I had any say in the matter I would be taking the picture in shorts and a t-shirt with my black eye on display for the whole world. Unfortunately my thoughts on the matter are about as valuable as a rock in a paper bag

@drClaw -I say let your wife doctor you up then. That could be just as funny as the black eye as that makeup job will have to be outstanding.Good luck :)

I suggest you try Maybelline’s Dream Matte Mousse and then Covergirls Advanced Radiance. If you have a woman around use a little compact. It should work!:) Good luck!

Don’t…just paint a black eye on everybody else in the picture….that would be stunning! ;)

Dermablend will cover it up, whoever mentioned that is correct. The best concelear before the dermablend will be a color that has a tinge of the opposite color from the color wheel. So if your black and blue is still purple, it will be different then if it has turned yellow. Also, the photograper will most likely be able to photoshop it back to normal if it is a little off, it might cost a little more. She can take color from a different part of your face and copy it onto the area that is discolored.

@drClaw…Fantastic! Call the Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, JC Penney’s (do they have Meier and Frank there or is it out of biz——haven’t been back in a decade). Don’t drive around looking, takes too long——call the make-up departments first and ask if they sell Dermablend. That’s how to find it. Good luck!

Liqued foundation! Mabaline New York, its like $7. Get the color one shade darker than your natural. Trust me i have done it befor and it will work. that way you dont have to spend $65 at ‘Nordstom, Macys, JC Penneys’. :)
