Do you know anybody that went to boarding school for elementary or high school, and if so, how did they like it?

I live near Connecticut and there are a lot of boarding schools around. Yesterday i was in a restaurant and overheard two girls talking about how one almost went to boarding school. I googled the school and i see it costs about $45,000 annually to go there. I am curious if you or anybody you know went to boarding school, and what the experience was like. Do you think the experience was enriching and wonderful, or torture being away from home at a young age?

Different people may have different opinions on this,it depends on what life you could get used to.Some people may want more friends while others prefer more private space. If you don’t think you can deal well with various people or adjust to a new environment, then you should be careful when making the decision. However, going to boarding schools is benefical for those who want to live on their own and venture into something unfamiliar.
We sent my son to a fancy NE boarding school for tenth grade without thinking it through very clearly. The first semester he got straight A’s and then received very bad grades. It was his way of telling us he wanted to come home and re-attend the Quaker Day School we were all a part of.
He had an astonishingly happy and successful 11th and 12th grades at our Friends School. We all did go into therapy (one-on-one) and dealt with the root causes of our problems.
Yes, I know quite a few people who went to boarding and military schools. They were all high achievers and did very well and liked school. These schools are expensive and even if the cost doesn’t matter to the parents, I think kids are better off with their families until the end of high school.
My dad went to boarding school from the age of 11 and he claims it was the best years of his life. He went to a military school and, luckily for my not so well of family, earned a scholarship. He has nothing but good memories of his time there apparently.
I know two boys who went to military boarding high schools. One hated it because he had been under no rules at home. One really liked it but had personality problems his senior year that I think he may have had anywhere. I believe he was generally helped there. I know one girl who went to military high school and missed her family and came home.
So I do not know if these kids were cross sections of opinion or result at all. All three were very intelligent but have not suceeded into college or jobs.
Not using these kids at all for my opinion I would say I could not have sent my kids away so young.
I went to one of those “old line” prep schools in the 70s. I didn’t fit in and was in constant battle to be left alone. I think it cost the same as a new Cadillac every year. Hated the fucking place. Left without graduating and went straight to college.
