How do you Motivate yourself after you've had a Bad Day ?

Asked by Scarlett (915points) July 20th, 2010

Hi,

I’m curious to know what are the ways people motivate themselves, either by affirmations, talking to yourself, self-reflection, etc?

What things do you do to make yourself feel better when you’re stuck in a rut or feeling blue ?

“This too shall pass”. “And, you got through all of “insert trials and tribulations of the past”, and you’re still standing”

Now, get your ass out there.

I make it a point not to sit around at home and stew about the day. I dine out with a friend, go to a movie alone if friends aren’t available, just do anything that takes my mind off ME. Things generally look brighter the next morning.

I go and do something that gives me pleasure. Might be to get something nice to eat, or a cold beer, or a couple of hours playing a mindless computer game, or watch a movie, listen to some good music, or go for a walk with my dog.

Take some “me” time and then make plans to get off to a better start tomorrow. Watching South Park helps me too. I guess escapism helps me take time to just clear my head and then I schedule a time to get back off my ass.

I don’t. I go to bed and try again tomorrow.

I allow myself to feel sucky for a day or so and then I go out and do something to take my mind off of it.

Listen to music especially Daniel Powter’s song “Bad Day”
Rant about my day to my friends.
When I got to sleep, I like to self-reflect then. :D

It’s pretty easy. What might be considered as a bad day for me might be the car battery dying, the power going out because of a tornado, or a co-worker giving me a hard time. There are more…but all seem easily resolved compared to what other people suffer. That is all that is needed to get me out of a personal pity party.

This makes me smile and one of my favourite quotes is by Mary Anne Radmacher and I think its just beautiful as well as being very inspiring:

“Courage does not always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying “I will try again tomorrow.”

I think of the people who have passed and no longer have that chance to live another day…I think of those less fortunate than myself and vow to work even harder so that I may pass along some good will. I think of those handicapped who do not have the faculty of my abilities and my bad day is absolutely no longer a bad day but a great day! I wish you all the same.

@Cruiser absolutely the best answer so far. Well said and much lurve <hugs> xx

A soak in my hot tub under the stars and staying in the present moment, not makng up negative stories in my head about why something should or should not be the way it is.

It IS the way it is.

I like the zen mantra of ’ If you understand, it is what it is, if you don’t understand, it is what it is.’ lol

Also..another one that always works is an Eckhart Tolle self question.

What problem do I have in this moment, right NOW?

The answer is always’..I have no problem in this moment.

I also remember to have tons of gratitude for all the things that are right in my world.

My health, my pets, my cool little house in the hills, and how far I have come in my life. :-)

I usually just go on my computer and watch Shane Dawson, eat lots of candy don’t mind the putting on weight thing, because candy and energy drinks always help on rough days

I either cry it out..or run. I’m more fond of running because the same energy I use to cry, benefits me and my physical body by running. I’d rather run and get my body in shape then to cry and waste time and energy.

I do a lot of different things depending on how I feel in the moment. Sometimes, meditation, relaxation, etc. helps. Trying to keep it in the moment helps a lot. I like to couch it up and watch things like the Earth series. It reminds me of what a beautiful planet we’re living on – makes me feel warm & grateful.
Other times, I like to eat my weight in chocolate.

I snuggle up to about 6 pillows and eat chocolate and drink coffee and then I eat more chocolate while I read a book or watch animal planet. Then I do night farm chores really slow and enjoy it. Feeding, watering, mucking, grooming, and talkin’ to the animals is soothing. By then I am thinking of my day as interesting instead of bad.

I clean the house despite not wanting to. Or if I’m physically tired, I’ll just tidy up the room I’m in. I’ll pet my cat. I’ll smoke some herb. I’ll pray. I’ll play a video game.

Disc2021's avatar

First I just put my mind in “give up and let go” stage. I try to forget about my mistake or anything bad that has happened and push forward without a care in the world. Running is my top drug – I feel like I could jog forever after a bad experience. I’ll play a video game and forget the world. If my good friends are around, I’ll call up one of them and go out to do something.

After I retreat, I remind myself that things aren’t always going to work out, life wasn’t supposed to be easy and that I could still keep working towards my goals or what I want things ultimately to be like. Usually, my mind is triumphant and I press right onward.

I just figure days are what they are. Nobody ever promised me a good or bad day. I am just glad to be here. Truth is, I rarely have a bad day. Some days are better than others to be sure, but I rarely have a bad day. Now, when I was in the service…

Scarlett's avatar

@josie cool answer. what about when you were in service? What branch were you in ? I was planning on going into the Air Force or Army.

Sometimes a light alcoholic beverage. If one is old enough and I am.

Other times a soapy foamy bath.

Talking it out with a friend.

Hitting the hay early. A good night’s sleep always works best.

Eat well, relax, sleep well, and get back to doing what you need to do.
We all have bad days, yet we go on.

Answer:
You can only inaugurate to live ingeniously when you capiche who you’re, but based on your contradicting inquisition, you don’t seem to be fathoming thyself. If you assert that you cognize how to ameliorate yourself, well then how do you engender ingeminate snafu’s? The only other viewpoint to this query would be theories in your consciousness but with the lack of trinitarian attributes: dread, impetus, and inculcation to pragmatize these theories. Solution for viewpoint #1 would be copiousness captivation of phrenic calisthenics in desiderate motif’s, supervened by utilitarian application of what was learned, which will eventually be conglomeration to life inwardness. Solution for viewpoint #2 would be one of the trinitarian attributes I wrote. For example with dread & impetus, bestowing a vendible of sentimental value to someone you trust on condition that if you do X, you get the merchandise back in one piece, however, if you fail to do X, the commodity gets bartered, bequeathed, or eradicated. An example of inculcation would be boot camp/military simulation. “Do X or suffer the consequences.” A good old round house kick to the head from a drill instructor, although extreme, it can be very effective in harnessing discipline.
