How much time should I leave between an international and a domestic flight?

Asked by xxii (3329points) July 21st, 2010

I’m flying from Singapore to Houston in August, and from Houston I need to take a domestic flight, on a different airline, to Raleigh.

My international flight lands in Houston at 2:10pm. From there I need to get off the plane, go through customs, pick up my bags, check in on my domestic flight and go through security for my domestic flight.

How late should I book my domestic flight to avoid missing it? How much leeway should I give myself? Anyone with international travel experience or experience with the Houston airport care to assist me?

Thanks!

Not familiar with the Houston airport…but, I’ve had both experiences on international/domestic flights, with regard to delays. You can check to see what their recent stats are and go from there.

I would give myself at leat an hour and a half. That should be plenty of time unless there are unusual delays.

I always leave two hours between international and domestic flights….you don’t know how far the next terminal is….how long the queues will be to go through security…and if your flight will be delayed.

Two hours minimum….is how I schedule things. It’s also less hurried and crazy that way.

I would say 2 hours if it is a different airline, and not partner airlines where you book your ticket all at once, which is how I interpret what you wrote. Do you know if the terminal for your arriving flight is very far from the terminal for your domestic flight? I have never been to Houston Airport, but that might make a difference also. Are you coming throough customs on an American passport?

@JLeslie – I’m coming through with a Singaporean passport, and am not familiar with the Houston airport.

Under those conditions, I might give myself two hours too, although I don’t know the Singapore airport.

Houston is a pretty big airport http://www.fly2houston.com/iahTerminals you can click on the map on this page and make it bigger. International arrivals are at the end of the airport Terminal E.

I was based in IAH (Houston) for seven years and cleared customs almost weekly. I can tell you that the time will vary. Leave yourself at least two hours. The time it will take to be ready for the next flight will depend on your day of travel, time of travel, and seat location on your inbound flight. First class clears quicker. If you are seated in the back of a 747, it could take you 30 minutes to get off the plane. A quick bathroom stop and you have eaten up almost your first hour. Study the map, use the bathroom before landing, try to sit close to the front of the plane and have all paperwork filled out correctly and ready to show customs. Don’t have any food on you and be prepared to ask for an electric cart. Changing terminals in Houston isn’t always easy and may involve a bus ride.

really depends on the airport…..

I’ve never been to Houston airport, but I have experience with international travel. I would recommend you to have at least 2 hours. What if your flight would not be arriving on time, do you want to be late for another flight? This did happen to my relative, her plane was late and it caused her miss another flight. She spent whole night at the airport, because next available flight was only in the next morning.

If you will be flying Continental airlines within the US it should give you a little more opportunity to cut it close, because it seems they are near the international terminal and Houston is their hub, so I would guess there are multiple flights to your final destination, so if you miss a flight hopefully there would be another the same day. Something to think about.
