A new user would look a lot like this

For one thing, their “lurve” score will be really, really low.

This is not always conclusive, though; some people joined a long while ago but haven’t been active. If you mean newly joined, the date joined is in the user profile.

And you can see them showing up in the Community Feed, on the right side of the page.

The number in the parenthesis beside their name is under 100.

You can backtrace anyone’s activity by looking at their profile, as Jeruba stated.

Not quite, @FutureMemory. Allowing your questions and answers to be seen by all is optional. You can also restrict viewing to people who are in your fluther. Sure, anyone can also use the search function, but only the profile shows all your questions and answers in one place, if you enable it.

How about the join date at the top of their personal profiles? Other clues, but not necessarily proof that the user is new, are: default jellyfish avatars, improper use of Fluther’s formatting standard called textile, low lurve scores, txtspeek (or other clues that the user hasn’t read the guidelines yet).

Disclaimer, these are only clues that the specific account is new. It doesn’t mean the user hasn’t been browsing Fluther without an account for weeks already (I did for a week or two), or that the new account is an older user’s new or alternative account.

edit: Basically everything @Jeruba said in her first answer.. :)

Some new users aren’t new, though. They’re old-timers who started a new account.

I usually go by atrocious spelling, bad grammar (because they aren’t used to the rules) and asking the kind of questions that drive seasoned members nuts.

But, you know, nothing is fool proof.
