What physical effects do you feel due to intoxication?

Asked by MrItty (17416points) July 23rd, 2010

I’ve had a couple tonight, and am feeling the effects. I’m wondering if most people feel the same things. When I get tipsy or drunk, what I experience is:
* an odd pain in my jaw
* a lack of caring about details (like refilling the water pitcher just now)
* a reduction in depth perception – like I somehow forget how far down the sofa is and fall onto it when I go to sit
* when I turn my head, the universe seems to take an extra half second to catch up.

Do you experience any or all of those when inebriated? Do the physical effects you feel differ with the kind of alcohol you ingest? I typically only drink Rum & Coke or flavored malt beverages.

I usually feel numb, that’s the first step. Eventually motor skills go, you might sway back and forth, start slurring or have trouble walking in a straight line. At this point sometimes nausea appears, but not for too long, I can tan that. If you can’t though, it’s better to go lie down and try to sleep.

As you describe, a light headed feeling and dizziness will most likely occur, and indeed, a lack of attention for detail. Whether you’re too happy, sad or sick to care, it usually almost shows up.
The physical effects can vary, and while it’s more or less the same with most alcoholic beverages, the speed and intensity at which they occur may differ.

There’s also a ’‘mental’’ part to it, like apathy, supreme happiness and the like. For example, for me it seems that whatever I do, say or think has no meaning unless I’m drunk.
At this point, in your mind the effects may be a little looser than what physically happens.

The pain in the jaw sounds odd though. I may be mistaken but, some people tend to down booze as pain relief, so that booze may cause physical pain is a bit alarming.

@Symbeline yeah the jaw thing is weird to me too. It’s more like a really intense tingle. Like the feeling of “pins and needles” when your arm goes numb, but stronger than that. I don’t really know how to describe it.

Ah, it might be the numbness? When I drink I usually feel pretty numb in the first phases; most especially my face. Does the feeling hurt?

MrItty's avatar

@Symbeline it’s certainly not pleasant. It makes me “stretch” my jaw a couple times to make it go away.

Very weird. I don’t know what to suggest, but that does suck. However, keep in mind that many uncomfortable situations may, and most likely will, occur when intoxicated.

Not as much as if you badtrip on weed or LSD but…XD

I end up horizontal.

You got most of it. Also, you probably hit or cut your chin. You should check that out in the morning.

I feel gitty. Happy and relaxed. Those must have been some stiff drinks. Odd about the jaw pain. I do notice I have to pee a lot. But it’s worth it,

Peeing rules.

@Afos22 No, you don’t understand. I didn’t mean I was feeling that just last night, or that last night was the first time I was intoxicated. I meant that’s one of the effects I feel at least 75% of the times I drink. I assure you, I’ve suffered no physical injury to my face or jaw.

Diminished sense of balance.
Diminished inhibition.
Increased motion blur.
Diminished motor control.
Wings sprouting out of the back.
Horns growing out of my head.
Growth of a bushy tail.
Flames coming out of my mouth.
Energy beams shooting out of my hands.
But it has been 4 years since I last drank ethanol.

I get frisky and feel the need to juggle sharp objects.

@Cruiser Don’t we all. XD

I usually feel really warm and and amused because I think the walls are moving and not me. It also impairs my judgement. I’d be more likely to say things I’d want to keep to myself or embrace people even though I usually like to have a huge imaginary circle defining my personal space.

I don’t drink that much anymore but when I do I always drink German or Belgian imported beers. I love wheat beer and Belgian White. Pleasant feeling from this type of beer without much of the ill/hangover effects I get from drinking anything else.
