What if you had vampire immortality, such as in the Twilight series?
Yes, I’ve read all 4 Twilight books, don’t judge me! Also: SPOILERS ahead, if you care.
So, the conclusion to the saga got me thinking… Bella gets what she wants, vampire life 4ever with Edward OMG!!!1 For a while, I thought being a vampire was pretty awesome. Beautiful, indestructible, impossibly strong, fast, no biological functions. There’s so much you can do. And Bella is with the love of her life and her daughter, pretty much set for eternity. But then I thought… holy crap, that’s gotta get really f*cking boring after a while. Sure, a century or so might be entertaining, visiting every corner of the world. But eventually, you’re gonna run out of stuff to see and do. And you’re with the same, unchanging coven. Unable to get close to humans because a) they die and b) can’t know your secret, so basically your interactions are limited to your small vampire coven for eternity. I think eventually I’d destroy myself just because I’d go mad! How would you handle immortality?

Immorality seems to the hot topic around here. If you want to really know what a drag it is, check with Zsa Zsa Gabor or Larry King. (On the other hands, Hugh Hefner seems to be enjoying it.)
I would not want to be immortal. If you were human, everyone you know would die off. If your were a vampire, you would have all the limitations of that (no going out in daylight; fighting your urge to kill to drink blood) forever.
I would not want any kind of immortality, just a long life and perhaps the ability to live again as a human with some retention of previous important knowledge.
lt’s not the immortality that’s the problem. It’s the limited number of people to interact with. I think they’d break down and find a way to interact with others, or make more vampires so as to have a decent vampire society.
I haven’t read the books, but my guess is that what this is about is the immortality of love. Undying love. Literally. As usual, it’s meant to be taken metaphorically, not literally. But you do raise an interesting question: is immortal love workable?
Ultimately, I think I’d rather be bored and alive than dead.
As for the vampire thing, that depends on what sort of “vampire rules” I have to follow. Most vampire stories involve not being able to go out in daylight. That would kind of suck.
If being a vampire means that I become a melodramatic weirdo (as in the Twilight movies) I think I would choose death ;-)
@drClaw Or a melodramatic weirdo like Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now there was a vampire that was playing with less than a full deck!
I’d travel the galaxy and see lots of wonderful planets.
I’d find someone to cut my head off.
i’d find a way to kill myself SOMEHOW. i don’t want to live forever.
