Gamers: did you usually use cheat in your game?

Asked by Your_Majesty (8238points) July 26th, 2010

Whatever kind of game you play in your life there would be time when something is just too hard for you or when you’re tempted for easier solution. Did you usually search the net for walkthrough, cheat, tips, hints, etc when you play a game? Do enjoy and think it’s useful? How about spoilers?,anyone like spoilers here?

I like to use any help I could get when I play a game. I really love spoilers! And since no one will know about that.

I like to use walkthroughs or guides for most games I play. I don’t see anything wrong with getting some advice on how to make playing a game more enjoyable.

However, I don’t like downloading hacks or abusing glitches because it makes it unfair for other people that play.

I don’t bother to read the storyline for most games so spoilers don’t really affect me.

I prefer to figure it out on my on. Although recently I have been more in to the online war games. Bad Co.2, CODMW, mag, etc. I did own a game genie back in the day.

Sometimes a walkthrough was necessary for certain games but I would only use cheats once I’ve already beaten a game just for fun. I even try to avoid the walkthroughs unless I hit a real dead end.

Some games really are impossible without a guide whereas others are enhanced by a little knowledge, especially on the second time through.

The only cheats I use are those that save me a lot of grinding. I don’t cheat for infinite ammo, invincibility, or special items, but I will do so for money.

I’ll often use FAQ’s and walkthroughs, but no actual cheats. Besides start plus B then select for unlimited lives died with the 90’s haha.

I’ve only used faqs (and only faqs) for multiplayer games that don’t rely on either story or would otherwise ruin the game experience for myself or the other players. I’m a huge fan of the Monster Hunter Wiki for figuring out recipes or how to get certain parts, and Street Fighter guides for tips, but I won’t look up things like how-to guides for games like Borderlands.

Yes, when i get stuck in a game and i REALLY can’t move forward, i look for cheats just to get me passed the difficult bits, but other than that, i like to work my way through the game on my own. :) I have no idea what spoilers are…

BoBo1946's avatar

No, that would take the fun out of it!

NaturallyMe's avatar

@BoBo1946 – not really! What takes the fun out of a game is if you’re stuck on a certain level forever!! :) (especially when it’s level 1…..)

Your_Majesty's avatar

@NaturallyMe Spoilers tell the whole story of the game(especially it it’s RPGs). I like to read spoilers if some particular games have different kind of ending that will need different requirement to trigger each of them. Unless I want to play the whole game from the beginning again.

@NaturallyMe loll…got’cha my friend!

Depends on the type of game. More serious games I try to beat without cheating at all, if I get stuck or something I will look up a walkthrough, but thats it. When I beat the game I will go back and cheat sometimes though.

If its a fuck around blow shit up game thats not meant to be taken seriously, I usually cheat off the start just to make it that much more fun.

I avoid spoilers though, I likes me a good story.

I play AD&D – pen and paper.

If you cheat, the dice will kill you.

The first time I included my little brother into the game, he fell in a punji pit. He would have just been knocked out, but he lied to the DM about how many hit points he had. Lo and behold, when I threw him a rope to climb back up, he failed a roll against strength (a strength of 17!) and fell back into the pit. This time he was impaled and died.

The funniest thing is my character was a Ranger with a few healing spells. I could have cured him, had he just taken the knock out.

Don’t lie to the dice. They know.

You have to use walkthroughs for RPGs, and games like GTA were more fun with a weapon cheat code. For online RPGs, I didn’t use major hacks, but since I was on a computer, I used a ‘windower’ because the game is fullscreen and you can’t do anything else while you were playing, the windower just let you play the game in a window.

@Seek_Kolinahr We play D&D as a family but we’re really silly with it. My hubby always has to be the Dungeon Master BUT when his head is turned I encourage the kids to re-toss the dice especially if they’ve had an unlucky run. They get a good giggle out of deceiving their dad.

Back in my old Playstation 2 days (and I still use it off and on), I resorted at one point to getting the game enhancer called the Game Shark to open up new opportunities in games that offered new levels of enjoyment for whatever I happened to be playing at that time.

As far as walkthroughs, I’ve used those on more occasions than I can count and I’ve never found a website better than GameFaqs for getting great information on hundreds of games.

I used cheats in The Sims, Sim City 4, and GTA San Andreas… because as far as the Sims are concerned, I had more fun building and designing houses than the actual game. For me it was more of an architectural game. Same with Sim City 4. And GTA SA was just fun flying around with a jetpack and setting stuff on fire… lol.

Sandbox games are always fun to cheat in.

Not so much a cheating/not choice, but im playing through fallout 3 right now and have decided to be good the whole game. Holy fuck… I feel like being evil is cheating now. Its about a million times easier to just kill everyone and steal their shit lol

When I was a kid I used to have to use walkthroughs to get through a lot of sticky parts in games. But I was bad at figuring out video games back then. I don’t do that as much anymore because I’ve gotten better at video games and I’ve discovered the fun in figuring the tough parts out myself. But if I get stuck for a long time so that it’s not fun anymore because I just want to move on, yeah, I’ll look up a quick hint on the internet.

Depends on the game. Grand Theft Auto just isn’t a very good game without cheats. And cheating in online games like Team Fortress 2 or Counter-Strike is about one of the dumbest things you can do.

But yeah, I like to fool around with cheats when it doesn’t take away from the total experience of the game. I personally don’t really use “god mode” cheats on any game, but unlimited ammo or spawn cheats can be very useful at times while still making the game somewhat difficult for yourself.

My favorite games, though, like Half-Life 2 and Portal, I’ve never used cheats in.

keobooks's avatar

I use hints. But cheats make the games no fun for me. I like to have some sort of risk involved and most games lose their risk when you employ cheats.

Its hard to cheat a slot machine. its hard to beat the dealer at blackjack. to attempt to cheat is a felony in most gambling states. its just not worth it.

le_inferno's avatar

When I play the Sims, I always use the cheat code to get them more money. It’s very, very difficult to play with the meager starting funds they provide you with.

keobooks's avatar

@le_inferno—In the sims, I’ve cheated to take AWAY all their money before. I like the game better when it’s really hard. In TS2, my sims started out sleeping outside and bathing in the sink because they couldn’t afford a shower. They usually got middle class by the time the kids were in school/

tifa's avatar

i think once you BEAT a game its justified to use cheats and walkthroughs to 100% it afterwards…had to do it for FFX-2…
But there ARE somegames out there that are just too hard to go through without codes like resident evil 2! my friend taught me the infinite ammo code and thats how i beat it but he was saying its possible to go through it with just the knife and i was like 0_0 IMPOSSIBLE!

le_inferno's avatar

@keobooks Lol, yeah I suppose it can be fun to play that way. But usually I had other story lines in mind and didn’t want to have the focus be around getting money. I used to take snapshots and make little Sim soap opera story books :D

mrrich724's avatar

I’d rather quit than cheat. That’s boring. I would check out the cheats once I have finished the game the right way, just to see, or to get more out of the game, but that’s after the game is complete.

I do not think using a player’s guide is cheating.

talljasperman's avatar

only after my interest wanes….then the cheating begins

Berserker's avatar

@tifa I totally beat RE2 with no codes. Mind you, I probbaly picked the easiest setting but…XD

reijinni's avatar

I cheat on a few games. Won’t say at the moment.
