Going to sound like a complete prick here, but…

I’ve never really been able to get into Tom Petty’s music because it’s not remotely technical. Like 3 chords per song, all songs the same 4/4 drum beat. And then when one of his songs comes around that does change up the instrumentalism, the vocals kill it for me. I just don’t understand how he could be considered so revolutionary or big when almost all of his songs sound the same.

But I suppose if I had to pick one it would be Runnin Down A Dream.

I don’t aim to ruin Tom Petty for anyone, I’m just stating my views.

@dverhey I agree with you, I have never really liked any of those ‘classic’ bands, Beatles, Doors, Bob Dylan, etc…but there is something about this song (my first post) from Petty that I really like & it’s the only Petty song in my entire iTunes library.

@rpmpseudonym I feel a similar way about Dylan. I think he’s an amazing songwriter, perhaps the best we’ve seen, but his actual songs have just seemed, well, boring. I actually really enjoy it when bands cover Dylan songs, and I usually like the covers more than the original song itself.

Tom Petty does have some classic songs, though, that’s for sure. I just guess they’ve never been my cup of tea.

I liked Tom Petty when a friend of mine introduced me to his first record when i was about 14 or 15. I think it was not titled, it was just Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I rememer Luna, and the big hit (i think from that album) was American Girl.

We saw him in concert, her parents were traditional Portugese, and her father came to the concert with us. We made him sit in the row behind us. Anyway, i am not so much into the later Tom Petty, I am more a fan of the early Tom Petty.

I remember when I saw The Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins kidnapped that girl, the senator’s daughter. When they first brought her onto the screen, she was sitting in her little brown car, which was my first car, listening to American Girl. She reminded me of myself, and when she got kidnapped, i remember having nightmares about it after. Part of what made me identify with her was her sitting in her little brown car listening to American Girl.

Free Falling (& I also really like his stuff with the Traveling Wilburys – I was listening to one of their CDs this morning while I was driving to work!).

@Russell_D_SpacePoet : i forgot Breakdown! I love that song!! it’s very sing-able.

i could be seeing Tom Petty right now – had someone buy me tickets but then i figured it would be too much trouble going down the city after work so i told him if he wanted to he could keep them.

@jca Very singable. Love to do that one at karaoke. You missed out on a good concert. Last time I saw him he played for almost 3 hours.
