Do compliments from certain people mean more to you than if they come from certain other people?
This was prompted by the “What’s the best compliment any one ever gave you” thread.
I got compliments galore from guys. I’d just smile nicely and say, “Thank you. It was all an accident.”
However, one time another female (who was heterosexual) told me “You have beautiful eyes!” that made me grin and give her a heart-felt “Thanks!” :) Actually, a couple of heterosexual women have told me that, and I knew they weren’t BSing, hoping to get me into bed, so it really meant something coming from them.

The compliment is worth more if the person paying it has the qualities they are complimenting you on. A compliment about your looks is better if it comes from someone attractive. A compliment on your intelligence is better if it comes from someone smart, etc.
Absolutely! I love and appreciate compliments from people whose opinions I respect, and I blow off those from people who have proved to be insincere. But my favorite compliments are ones I give to myself when I do something that I feel is good or right. (I’m also my toughest critic.)
I love compliments. I’ll take any I can get. It make feel good, and give me a ego boost
Of course they do – just like their opinions matter more, their ideas matter more…so do their compliments.
Got to be genuine! Remember when I was working for a living and not retired, some insurance agents would slap me on the back and then stick the knife in at the same time.
i like all non sarcastic compliments. but from strangers it has a different meaning and different feel
@Dutchess_III Thanks. I love Geishas. I have one that moves but this site does let it.Sad
Someone on Fluther said I had nice eyes after I told her she was really pretty. Then I just thought oh crap there must be something wrong with all the rest of my face. Eyes are an easy way out, or hair, or something that people can easily compliment. It meant nothing and I disliked it.
Another time my friend complimented how good my eyebrows looked that day and it made me so happy. So yeah, it definitely changes for me. I wouldn’t say I don’t take compliments well, it was just that the girl on Fluther was reciprocating, which you can’t really do with compliments I find.
@ninahenry But you do have nice eyes and the rest of your face is nice, as well p.s.: I’m not the girl she’s talking about
@ninahenry I went to your profile – that picture is much bigger and I can see them
The unexpected compliment from complete strangers often are uplifting as it is unexpected and often makes you feel great…unless of course they are creeping you out kind of compliments. The best ones though are from that person you made that special effort for and they noticed!
@Cruiser yeah that was exactly it- I’d done my eyebrows differently that day as I’d paid more attention to them and she noticed even though I don’t see her that often. My boyfriend didn’t though and I see him like every other day haha.
I appreciate compliments, and I’m not aware of analyzing them depending on who they are from.
Real life references work like Google’s page rank algorithm.
Definitely! There is someone in particular who sometimes give me a compliment, but i take it with a pinch of salt because for some reason i feel they don’t REALLY mean it. I feel that way from that entire family, it’s weird. So, while it’s ALWAYS nice to get a compliment for anyone (except from some ew perv), some don’t mean that much to me.
Whatever D, you just love the lions and lion poop.
