Stay away from the gym business unless you live in a town that is very much into fitness and the current gyms are always crowded.
That said I would join a franchise like Golds Gym or Bally’s or Planet Fitness. They will help you set up everything and they have a pretty good following. I think Planet Fitness is great. They only charge a one time fee and then 10 or 20 dollars a month depending on what you want. For 10 dollars you get access to all the equipment. They are hipper and newer but already have a strong following because of the cheap monthly rates.

In todays economy there aren’t many who can afford 50 dollars a month. As soon as money gets tight people will drop the gym membership first unless their job depends on them being fit.
And so many communities offer amenities like gyms to residents. So look around your area first to determine if its something thats even needed.

Talk to local business about them paying half the cost of membership for their employees and the employees pay the other half for a special rate. A lot more companies who don’t want to develop their own gyms are trying to lower insurance rates by getting employees to join gyms and get fit.

Get good trainers.

Remember that many people will join in January as part of a New Years resolution and then quit by Feb. By April it will pick up again and may last till August and then die off again in the Fall till New Years.

Check out some national franchises and throughly check out your nearest locations ( they should be very busy or forget it) and how many gyms are already in your location.

If this is a first time venture for you, it would be a good idea to consult professional fitness center consultants fitness center consultants who specialize in setting up gyms. Not only will they be able help you pinpoint your target clientele, they’ll also guide you every step of the way right from planning and design to setup and maintenance of your gym. All the best!
