Inflammatory eye trouble. Help?

Asked by fightfightfight (601points) July 29th, 2010

Earlier today I was at my friend’s house and he accidentally poked me in my left eyeball. Well, that was this morning and immediately afterwards it started burning really badly and my eyesight was really blurry. I tried rinsing it with water and putting ice in a wash cloth on it but nothing has worked so far, and it’s still really swollen and burns. Plus, I am typing this with one eye closed. My dad said if it continues like this until tommorow that he’ll take me to the doctors. Do you have any advice on what to do with it until then???

Maybe it’s time for a trip to the ER right now. You may have a scratch on your cornea. You don’t want to mess with your eyes. The longer you wait, the more chance you have for infection.

instead of ice warm it. so blood can get to it. and so antibodies can kill whatever infection or bacteria you have

Warm water will not replace antibiotic ointment. You need a doctor to look at that eye now.

if you warm the inflated area than blood will get to it quicker carrying antibodies. the bodies natural defense to bacteria.

Is there a doctor in the house to refute dangerous pseudo-medical advice? Shi, and rarebear, where are you?

Warming and/or cooling your eye will not remedy an infection if it’s present.

The use of antibiotic ointment may be premature as there is no indication that if there is an infection it is bacterial.

Since none of us can examine your eye it would be impossible to give you anything other than an educated guess.

Please consider that both your cornea and your friend’s finger will have flora that will include bacteria and viruses. Any lesion to the eyeball can inoculate it and cause a reaction.

If your eye is swollen to the point of altering your vision I would suggest you go to the emergency room ASAP.
