Are there any foods that take you back to the movie theater when you were a kid?
For me it’s Hot Tamales, Junior Mints and Sweetarts!

Giant dill pickles: our theater had a huge jar of them sitting on the counter.
Jordan Almonds and Bonbons! Am I dating myself? (Should I be?)
Nothing tastes That good but popcorn with heated butter sorta kinda. )=:
My first movie experiences were the Drive In’s and the pepperoni pizza and brine cured pickles there. The closest I can re create the joy is to cook a Tombstone frozen pizza, add a Cola flavored Icee and find a pickle served out of a big deli jar.
Potato chips, cold mineral water or bottled tea,and some fruit jelly-candy. I avoid these food when I grew up.
Popcorn (I don’t eat it that often).
Curly Wurly & a bag of spangles. Oh & a tin of Irn Bru.
The little theater in my town is a clone of the one I went to while growing up. I would swear that the stale and oily popcorn is also the same…maybe held in a cryochamber for 40 years.
Non pariels. Or is it pareils? Mmmmmm. Little chocolate buttons with itty bitty sprinkles all over the tops.
@Trillian: It’s nonpareils, which means in French, nothing equal to them.
Good & Plenty…and it came in a container about the size of a matchbox compared to what it looks like today.
And Tootsie Rolls made with real chocolate and sugar; today’s versions taste like rubber bands.
@gailcalled Thank you. I loved them. Rubber bands? What are you using as a basis for comparison? ;-)
Goobers, Dots, and popcorn!
@gailcalled Now I’m intrigued. Is it really cool story about why and how it came about that you put rubberbands in your mouth, or did you just hold them there for convenience while you were doing something?
Good and Plenty candy. I think the box looked like one of these the last time I had any.
@Trillian: Nah. I am using poetic license here. The new Tootsie Rolls taste rubbery and artificial compared to my memories. I could just as easily have said that they now taste like nibbling on a rubber glove (which I haven’t tried either).
I miss the real popcorn we used to get.
@Adagio They sound fantastic! A cousin lives in Australia. I’ll ask her if she can bring some the next time she comes to the States.
… where did the (candy) come from???? I didn’t write it!
@Adagio, it’s the (candy) gremlins/(candy) goblins! You absolutely have to watch out for them, all the time. You can’t let your guard down for even a second, trust me.
My family and I never ate at the movie theater. I didn’t realize how common it was until I was a teenager and would go with friends. I never really understood why people would want to eat and watch a movie.
@Adagio It seems to be part of the wiki link title.
Pom Poms, Milk Duds and those cellophane slabs of red or black licorice. As a young kid I went home on late. hot Saturday afternoons with many a tummy-ache.
@Trillian You never chewed on a mouthful of rubber bands just to see? Um…or. Am I odd? DON’T ANSWER THAT!!!
The chocolate dollops w/ white spreckles on them. I think they’re called snow balls, maybe?? Snow something..
@SVTSuzie : Sno-Caps. Very yummy. One of my faves, too.
I loved Good and Plenty too but don’t remember having it at the movies. I had lime Charms in those.
