Do you ever find yourself overwhelmed by the amount of high visibility colouring around us?

Asked by FireMadeFlesh (16603points) July 31st, 2010

From time to time I find myself overwhelmed by the number of things that are painted or designed to have high visibility. Our man made environment no longer uses the soft colours of nature, but everything is bright and intense to try to steal our attention – whether it is for the sake of advertising or warning of a dangerous crack in the pavement.

Do you ever have to take a break while you’re down the street, close your eyes for a few seconds, and then keep going? Do you look for the more natural parts of our environment? Is it possible to have colour pollution?

No. Once again, I seem to have the exact opposite problem. Here, in the U.S. it seems, at least to me that everything is bland, beige, concrete colored. I am so happy and pleased when I drive buy a building that has some color, or an area where people have chosen to have murals painted on their buildings. I see pictures of cities and villages in some other parts of the world and there is very often so much color. I would love that. Like that “painted ladies,” the Victorian homes of San Francisco.

Where I live it’s about 90% trees, so we don’t have that problem. : )

Do you feel like the chroma of the world in general has been amped up or that commercial enterprises have access to and use higher chroma colors?

Colour polution? Maybe it has more to do with objects and shapes for you. There’s bright and ugly colors in all enviroments.

It can be distressing. I know what you mean. The sheer garishness sometimes of competing billboards and business signs. So many things are designed to get your attention that I feel that once one reaches a saturation point one becomes innured and then misses lots of things.
I have Clive Barker moments sometimes when I look around and see so many different signs and slogans… And sometimes I have x-files moments…

What a great question. I’m so happy I don’t have this problem (I live in the middle of cornfields), but I can definitely understand. I think this would bother me if I had to deal with it on a daily basis.

I have the same thing but with speed. One day I could be going 50 mph, but it only feels like 20. The next day I could be going 50 and it will feel like 75.

@gypsywench I just spent two weeks in South America, where I came up with this question. In the cities, there is no attempt to make a building mesh with the environment, and each building is different to the next. Businesses use the brightest colours they can, and try to outdo each other with the size of their signs. Its a great place to be, but it is very busy and it takes concentration to focus on what you are doing.
In contrast, the rural areas have the most breathtaking landscapes I have ever seen, with the most beautiful and relaxing colours. Where I live it is not so bad, but being there and going between cities and rural areas frequently really brought out the contrast to me. I realise there may be many other factors, but these were my thoughts.

Have you watched “Blade Runner” recently?

That’s what popped into my mind the moment I read this Q.

Excellent visual commentary upon this trend. That set design was fantastic.

I don’t like when people apply bright and far too attractive colours(like common blue, red, green, etc) in public places,it makes them look so childish and less conservative.

I’m proud of our ability to recognize about 16.7 million different colours and shades. I don’t like artificial colouring.

@Buttonstc I’ve been meaning to watch it for a long time now. I’ll get around to it eventually.

When I fill that. I go sit in my back yard and watch the trees sway in the breeze..Maybe you need to take a break from the hustle and bustle. Go camping!!! That will do it too. Spend time with nature and then go back to your life.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Color is what brings the world alive. I love to see houses painted in fun colors. I love to see seemingly disparate colors create interesting patterns. When I’m in more natural, neutral colored environments, I search for the color; the beauty that stands apart from the bland.
