Have you ever been put off by a commercial and wasn't sure why?
I’ve got this commercial that keeps coming on tv and it bugs me every time. I have no logical reason to be offended, but I am. Has this happened to anyone else? What was the commercial about?

My great grandfather said something one time that to this day informs me: “You have to take offense”.
So, you have to define what is wrong in your mind before the issue can be properly addressed.
As for me, I don’t get consciously upset by a commercial, I get consciously upset by repeated commercials.
Airing 10 of the same exact commercial during a given show/event seems to me asinine, and literally makes me hate them, and consciously work to avoid their product.
I watch a lot of TV previously recorded on DVR many times simultaneously with doing something else (like reading or Fluthering) so I usually don’t stop what I’m doing to grab the remote to FF through commercials. I just kind of tune them out and resume paying attention when the program comes back on.
But the one commercials that irritates me enough to grab the remote is the Slap-Chop guy Vince and the absolutely asinine dialogue. I can’t mentally ignore it. It is so over the top illogically stupid that I can’t believe some dimwit at the ad agency approved it.
“This tuna is boring. Stop having a boring tuna. Stop having a boring life.”
Heavy long drawn-out emphasis on booooring each time.
As if chopping it up automatically makes it interesting ? Incredible.
Billy Mays had the most annoying loud voice but at least his dialogue basically made sense.
I just think telling folks that once they buy a Slap Chop, their life will automatically become exciting is the most ridiculous claim ever made for a product.
“your life is exciting now”
Really ?
Being both a consumer and an ex-commercial writer-producer, I have too many pet peeves about TV commercials to list in one post. But some of the major ones are: silly animated “spokesanimals” (Geiko gecko) and inanimate talking objects, annoying actors like the Progressive woman, camera-incompetent CEOs as corporate spokespeople (Chrysler’s Lee Iacocca started it all), and the overuse of CGI. All this is designed to make me remember the name of the company name or product, but in most cases, I only remember how much they irritate me and insult my intelligence. By the way, for years people told me what they didn’t like about my commercials, which is one of the reasons I’m an EX-adman.
I’ve pretty much stopped watching television, except for the occasional Jeopardy, so I don’t have that problem any more.
I agree with the repeated commercials.(ipso) I stopped buying Wisk detergent because of a commercial 20 years ago. The Lolly Pop lap top (Dell) commercial is another one. Sure they are great lap tops, but I’ll never own one. Not just because of the commercial, (I hate the song and the whole premise.) but the repeated running. Besides, there are many good lap tops and detergents out there.
I have been conditioned by how much I hate stale mindgames to go into a murderous rage whenever I see any commercial, or ad.
There are some really good, funny commercials on TV and then there are some that are so damn lame it’s irritating. What bothers me are commercials that I view and then actually have no idea what was just advertised.
HOVEROUND….........and all the other commercials aimed at elderly people. daily, i watch The Price Is Right. 90% of the commercials, on this show, are aimed directly at older people. they play the same commercials over and over, day after day. like, AARP, Liberty diabetes, and those that deal with constipation. i realize that a lot of elderly people watch this show and are in nursing homes or wheelchair bound. but, a new commercial every once in a while should not be out of the question.
@py_sue Would you mind if I ask for your example? I’m a bit confused by the “I have no logical reason to be offended, but I am.” Thanks!
2nd Answer: Excedrin for migraine relief. i have had migraine headaches, since i was 18. i have tried just about every medication known to man, to find relief. and yes, this included Excedrin, which does not work. Excedrin inclues aspirin and caffeine. neither one of these ingredients will ever come close to relieving a migraine headache attack. i have taken at least a bathtub full of Excedrin, without relief. each time i see this commercial on television, i tell myself…...“keep your cool. you know the truth about Excedrin and maybe some day, it will be discovered to be a fraud”.
There are a lot of commercials that annoy me but I’m usually able to pinpoint exactly why. Usually it’s either an annoying tune or stereotyping/prejudice in the choice of characters.
Have you seen the new Quizno’s commerical 543 with these cats singing annoying song. I cringe.
@Pied_Pfeffer It’s that Kia hamster commercial. “You can go with this, or you can go with that.”
Yes & no. Yes, I have been pissed off offended by TV commercials (mostly sleazy Republican political propaganda ads) AND no, I usually know exactly why they piss me off offend me or my intelligence (once again, that’s mostly sleazy Republican political propaganda ads).
@py_sue Thank you! Yes, I know the ones you mean and don’t get it either. For those of you not privy to to the Kia auto commericials, Here is an example.
Another Kia ad-hater! Only I’m usually forced through the radio ad instead.
@Austinlad What’s your take on the Trunk Monkey ads?
There was a series of TV ads that put me off. One had a woman secretly shaving her leg in the produce section with her foot upon on the counter where the vegetables were sprayed, a man washing his hair in the household cleaner section, and a woman with a baby eating up all of the samples in an unattended station. I have no idea what the commercials were for and wish I did. I would never purchase what they were attempting to peddle.
Yes, mostly due to false advertising just to get you to buy their products or services.
I never trust anything these companies say.
