Will the new Ford Taurus SHO vehicles be accepted as police cars?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) August 2nd, 2010

Ford Motor Company is taking a big gamble that their new Ford Taurus SHO vehicles will be accepted as police vehicles throughout America. i assume that Ford is trying to replace the Crown Victoria with the Taurus SHO, in order to be competition with Chevrolet’s corner of the police car market with the Chevy Impala, currently used across America. Question: Ford Taurus owners, since you have owned one of these vehicles, do you believe the Ford Taurus SHO can withstand the torture thats forthcoming as a marked police vehicle?

I think someone asked a similar question and I will answer this one the same way. I’m a traditionalist, a purist; if it’s not a Crown Vic, it’s not a police car. Also, when I’m out on the road, @john65pennington, not that I am doing anything bad or wrong, of course, like speeding, I wouldn’t do anything like that :-), but I like to see them coming, I like to know what I’m looking for, and I am looking for a Crown Vic, not a Ford Taurus or whatever. What do the cops want? They have to drive them, they have to be able to depend on their vehicles to “perform under pressure.”

I see more Dodge Chargers than anything around here. Of course that might change now that the Chrysler Plant is being dismantled. Downtown Cops are still driving the Impala’s. But County and HP has mostly Chargers and a few Crowns.

That new Taurus seems a fine car.

Where do they still use Impalas? I haven’t seen those (or a Caprice) in many years. I’ve seen Taurus, Crown Vic, and as of late a shitload of Chargers, but no Chevy.

@lillycoyote The cops really don’t care if you know what to look for, and in fact may prefer you not to know.
What cops want is a car that they can pound 31 flavors of shit out of without it falling apart, has the performance to get the job done, the reliability and toughness to handle near-constant use and many miles, and the fuel economy to not bleed taxpayers dry as they are on patrol.
If this is the SHO that I am thinking of then it was designed by asking cops what they wanted, and I don’t think that having a Crown Vic nameplate was on the list of priorities. In fact, I see a smaller, lighter chassis that can do the same job as a large pig of a frame as being a good thing, and the new Interceptor is tougher and nimbler than any Vic (probably quicker to; I haven’t seen the numbers though), so the only reason to kvetch is if tradition matters more to you than job performance.

With the low roof-line the view out of a Charger or Taurus is constrained. Isn’t that bad for police work? I rented a Charger and avoided moving in reverse because I couldn’t see anything behind me.

Thanks all for the answers. yes, they did consult police officers before they rebuilt the Ford Tauraus SHO. most everything the officers asked for is incorporated in the SHO. only time will tell if this vehicle will be durable enough to withstand the stress a police car faces each day. i only wish i were still in uniform, so i could give one a trial run. john

I read about that model a while ago. http://www.caranddriver.com/news/car/10q1/2012_ford_police_interceptor-car_news. It’s got some things I think cops (and anybody else who digs cars) would want. First off – all-wheel drive. That’s one thing the current FWD Impala and RWD Charger lack. It’ll have a 6-speed tranny. The base V6 will put out at least 15 more ponies – Ford says more – than the outgoing V8 in the dinosaur Vic. The turbo model will be a monster, but I suspect most uniforms won’t be getting one.

I think it will be a great car, but I wonder how it will fit in with tight municipal budgets. If they can’t compete with GM and Chrysler on price, they won’t sell a lot of them.

And in a few years, there will be a whole lot of hot-rod taxis :D

Personally, I’m also thinking Bluesmobile 2022
